MSU Policy on SARS
Subject: MSU Policy on SARS
In light of the outbreak of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) in
several regions of the world and based upon the best available information from
the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the President's Executive
Council has approved the following policy which is effective immediately:
A. Outbound Travelers (faculty, staff, students): There is a moratorium on
MSU funded or sponsored travel for University purposes to or through areas where
there is a SARS-related travel advisory issued by the U.S. Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention (CDC). Those who feel a compelling University-related
need to travel to these regions must receive approval in advance from the Office
of the Provost. Current CDC advisories can be found on the following web site:
http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/sars/travel.htm
B. Inbound travelers (faculty, staff, students, visitors):
1. Unless ordered or advised to do so by public health officials, MSU will
not restrict or prohibit those who have recently traveled to SARS affected areas
from visiting the campus or attending university classes or other events.
2. MSU will seek to identify travelers arriving from SARS affected areas and
provide information regarding the symptoms of SARS and the appropriate response
should symptoms occur.
3. During international student orientation, a Student Health Service
representative will meet the group of students coming from SARS affected
countries to provide information on SARS and the appropriate response should
symptoms occur in Bozeman.
C. SARS Case or Suspected SARS Case among Campus Population: MSU will follow
the direction of public health authorities, principally the Gallatin City-County
Health Department, related to control of an infectious disease. MSU will
initiate the campus emergency response mechanism.
Note: The MSU Student Health Service has copies of a handout covering
information about what to do if someone located in the Bozeman area develops the
symptoms of SARS. Please contact Student Health Director Jim Mitchell at 5901 or
jimm@montana.edu for a copy of this handout if you are expecting visitors from
SARS affected regions.
