University Firearms Policy

Purpose: The purpose of this policy is to specify which weapons are prohibited on the university campus, and the conditions pertaining to possession, transport and storage of firearms.
Policy: Montana State University defines the following items as weapons: firearms, including rifles, shotguns, handguns; knives with blades four (4) inches or longer, explosives, swords, nunchucks, throwing stars and other martial arts weapons, crossbows, compound bows, recurve bows, long bows, pepper spray (except for small, personal protection dispensers), BB guns, paintball guns, dangerous chemicals, and non-functioning replicas that could be confused with actual firearms.
Weapons are prohibited on campus, except as follows:
1. Residents of residence halls may store the following unloaded weapons in university storage facilities in compliance with the requirements set forth in the Residence Life Handbook (http://www.montana.edu/wwwocl/Reslife/pdfs/handbook.pdf): rifles, shotguns, crossbows, compound bows, recurve bows and long bows with field or broadhead points. Students residing in Residence Halls may transport unloaded firearms to and from the university storage facilities as outlined in the Residence Life Handbook.
2. Effective August 1, 2008, residents in Family & Graduate Housing may store the following unloaded rifles, shotguns, crossbows, compound bows, recurve bows and long bows with field or broadhead points within the confines of their assigned rental unit in compliance with the requirements set forth within the Family & Graduate Housing contract http://www.montana.edu/fgh/information/policy-contract.php#Firearm%20Policy and policies.
3. Residents of residence halls and Family & Graduate Housing may transport unloaded firearms and weapons in a vehicle onto and off of campus with the immediate intent of proper storage on campus as outlined above or with the immediate intent of taking the weapon off campus.
Only university police department officers and employees of a contracted private security company, registered to carry firearms pursuant to Title 37, Chapter 60, MCA, working in the course and scope of their employment, are authorized to carry loaded firearms on campus.
