The Humanities Institute at Montana State University is committed to providing a place where members of the University and Bozeman communities can further their engagement with important cultural and intellectual issues of our time. It is dedicated to advancing the whole of knowledge, especially at the complex interface of the arts, history, literature, philosophy, science, mathematics and the social sciences. Unlike many other similar institutions, however, the Humanities Institute at MSU will not function solely as an intellectual retreat, but will further both scholarly and public understanding by involving leading scholars, students, and public intellectuals in the search for solutions to some of the most pressing concerns of our community, our region, our nation, and our planet.

The Humanities Institute supports MSU's vision statement of offering a "learning environment distinguished by innovation and discovery." It also serves the university's mission to "serve the people and communities of Montana by sharing our expertise and collaborating with others to improve the lives and prosperity of Montana."

The Humanities Institute is expected to:

  • Support an annual, rotating group of "resident scholars" working on a common theme, for instance the social and ethical implications of science, and host a yearly international symposium on the central issues being addressed.

  • Consilience

"Consilience" by John Robinson, inspired by the book of that name by E.O. Wilson

Support partnerships between MSU scholars and community leaders drawn from area non-profits to examine issues of pressing public concern and offer ongoing public seminars on these topics.

  • Support individual fellows whose work focuses on the intersection of the humanities, sciences, and arts, and host smaller colloquia for MSU and Bozeman community members.

  • Award a yearly fellowship for a master teacher on sabbatical from the public schools.

  • Support projects that involve graduate and advanced undergraduate students in advanced research.

  • Host a series of lectures and performances by distinguished visitors as well as by resident scholars and fellows.

  • Provide an interactive, state-of-the-art exhibition space that will use advanced computer technology and high speed internet connectivity to link scholars and visitors to major museums, galleries, exhibition sites, and research resources around the world.  This "humanitarium"—analogous to a planetarium for human cultures—will also provide resources for locally developed projects to be exported to global audiences.

  • Offer indoor and outdoor reception areas for public gatherings, lectures, and private special events.

  • Provide additional facilities including a large lecture hall, office space, meeting rooms, and catering facilities, as well as an outdoor sculpture garden and native plant garden.
