Fishing The River Why
July 12-13* Lisa Eckert * ENGL 280 * $360

Literary traditions from all cultures feature the river as a central image that represents phases of life and the passage of time. This course examines the metaphors of river and fly-fishing in David James Duncan's best-selling novel, The River Why, as well as in other short works of literature. Participants will explore the concept of the river and fishing in these works, and the relationship between self and nature. A field trip will cover fly-fishing basics—fly casting, knots, entomology, equipment, lore, jargon, and angling ethics—followed by fishing a wade-friendly river, discussion of where fish live and why, and other river related topics. This workshop combines an enjoyable approach to literature and an educational outdoor experience. REGISTER ONLINE
