Patricia Winterton, who came to MSU from South Dakota, was among the forty-one seniors to be recognized at the 24th annual Awards for Excellence Banquet in February, and the first ever from the Liberal Studies program. Patricia was selected for her remarkable academic achievements, campus leadership, and community service. In turn, Patricia selected Dr. Lynda Sexson, a Professor of Humanities in the Department of History and Philosophy, as her mentor. |
| Patricia is completing the Quaternity option with a minor in Religious Studies. In addition to her coursework at MSU, Patricia has assisted three professors in the Department of History and Philosophy along with other students in their learning experiences. She spent the summer of 2005 working with Dr. Lynda Sexson on an Undergraduate Scholars Research Grant, integrating the work of philosophers of science and feminism. In fall semester 2005 she studied at the University of Hawaii Hilo as part of the National Student Exchange program. While in Hawaii Patricia constructed photographic essays that reflected elements spanning from Chinese language to geology. |
| Following graduation in May 2006, Patricia plans to spend a portion of her summer working with Dr. Susan Cohen, a Professor of Humanities in the Department of History and Philosophy, on an archeological dig in Israel. She also intends to continue her academic experience into graduate-level work within Religious Studies. |

“The knowledge I have gained from this program has satisfied all aspects of my personality including my imagination, making it possible for me to connect and integrate my various interests in religious studies, design, and science into one curriculum. I believe it is important to be educated rather than trained; at MSU my mind has been exposed to different ways of knowing, opening it up to the links between multiple disciplines, which is crucial to our understandings of the world.”
