WE INVITE YOU TO PARTICIPATE IN THE
2006 Spirit of the West Marching Band
PRESEASON TRAINING PROGRAM
HOW DO I BECOME A MEMBER OF THE SPIRIT OF THE WEST?
Read the information presented in this booklet, return the enclosed postcard
by August
5th 2006, then attend our Preseason Training Session and get ready to enjoy one of
the greatest
experiences of your college career.
WHY SHOULD I JOIN THE SPIRIT OF THE WEST?
• To belong to a musical group whose performance standards are highly
professional;
• To be a part of the Montana State University Bands organization;
• To merit The Spirit of the West scholarship opportunities;
• To play musical arrangements written exclusively for The Spirit of the
West;
• To become an important part of the campus community;
• To see and support the MSU Bobcats at home and away games;
• To meet new people and develop lifelong friendships;
• Because it’s FUN!
DO I PLAY WELL ENOUGH TO MAKE THE SPIRIT OF THE WEST?
YES! We make every effort to accept as many students as possible for The Spirit
of the
West. Around 80% of The Spirit of the West is NON-MUSIC majors and these students
are a very important part of our organization and routinely earn leadership
positions.
WILL THE SPIRIT OF THE WEST INTERFERE WITH MY SCHOOL WORK?
The Spirit of the West rehearsals are scheduled at a time of day when few other
classes
meet and little class time is lost due to travel. With careful planning you
should have time
to participate in The Spirit of the West. As with any college activity, you
will be
responsible for keeping track of your time and keeping up with all of your schoolwork.
PLAN AHEAD – you can do it!
WILL I RECEIVE UNIVERSITY CREDIT?
YES! One full credit may be earned for each semester of participation in The
Spirit of the
West. All students who participate in The Spirit of the West MUST be registered
for the
course. There are NO EXCEPTIONS to this rule.
HOW DO I EARN A SCHOLARASHIP? HOW MUCH CAN I EARN?
You can earn a Spirit of the West scholarship by registering, participating,
and meeting
the criteria outlined in the syllabus throughout the entire Fall semester. The
Director of
Bands determines the amount. Amounts vary depending on level of involvement.
