Week of... Lecture Activites Actions to Be Taken Capstone Lecture Homework/Deliverables

1/7/19

Classes begin on 1/9/2019

Since Capstone meets on Mondays we have no class activities this first week.

Project review & selection:

This semester's project choices will be posted to the "Projects" link prior to the first class meeting. Check out the project offerings, consider your options, and then SUBMIT your 'Top Ten" requests no later than 5:00 PM on Wednesday 1/16/2019. You must use the EXCEL form provided on the D2L site!

PROJECT SELECTION INSTRUCTIONS

  • Rank your requests in-order using the EXCEL form below, also available on the D2L site. That document will be posted as a NEWS ITEM attachment on the EMEC/ETME 489 site when projects are posted.
  • Prepare a brief  write-up of pertinent qualifications. This "mini-resume" should provide information that might influence our assignment to a group.
  • Provide your preferred email address.
  • If any KNOWN, EXTREME personality conflicts exist, please let instructors know ASAP so we avoid group makeup problems downstream.
  • Any students who have not submitted a request will be assigned to under-subscribed groups.

    PROJECT SELECTION EXCEL SHEET

Additional project selection considerations:

  • Be Flexible. Not everyone will get their top choice, but we generally can place all students in one their top four or five projects.
  • Choose for yourself. Every individual has  different interests, different background experiences, different life goals and varying career goals. Our projects cover a wide array of engineering applications, so students can usually find an appealing project. We strongly discourage the practice of  friends 'buddying up' and submitting identical project choices: That practice short-circuits the notion of choosing projects based on best fit with your individual aptitude and interests.
  • Be proactive. If you REALLY want a certain project, make that obvious by generating a detailed, enthusiastic, and convincing 'mini-resume' to support your top choice(s).

At the close of the semester, all groups should have completed preparations to enable component fabrication to begin promptly in Spring Semester:

  • The component and system designs should be completed, and well-documented with an accurate and professionally-prepared engineering drawing set.
  • The chosen design should be backed up with a thorough and correct analysis.
  • Orders for ALL required parts and materials should have been submitted.
  • A complete manufacturing plan should be ready for implementation.
  • Sponsors and Faculty Advisors should be in-the-loop and supportive of the next steps.

If your group cannot claim these milestones by the end of the term, your project is in jeopardy.
Work smart to ensure you are poised for success in the upcoming semester!

Have a great break, and be safe. See you in the Fall...
