Week of... Lecture Activites Actions to Be Taken Capstone Lecture Homework/Deliverables
{Generally due no later than midnight on Fridays}

8/26/19

Tuesday Lecture

Introduction:

  1. Course Purpose, Organization
  2. Projects & Project Placement Discussion, Procedures, Timeline.

Project review & selection:

This semester's project choices will be posted to the "Projects"  link prior to the first class meeting.Check out the project offerings, consider your options, and then SUBMIT your 'Top Ten" requests no later than 5:00 PM on Wednesday 8/28/2019. You must use the EXCEL form provided on the D2L site!

PROJECT SELECTION INSTRUCTIONS

  • Rank your requests in-order using the EXCEL form posted as a NEWS ITEM attachment on the EMEC/ETME 489 D2L site.
  • Prepare a brief  write-up of pertinent qualifications. This "mini-resume" should provide information that might influence our assignment to a group.
  • Provide your preferred email address.
  • If any KNOWN, EXTREME personality conflicts exist, please let instructors know ASAP so we avoid group makeup problems downstream.
  • Any students who have not submitted a request will be assigned to under-subscribed groups.

    Some additional project selection considerations:

    • Be Flexible. Not everyone will get their top choice, but we generally can place all students in one their top four or five projects.
    • Choose for yourself. Every individual has  different interests, different background experiences, different life goals & career goals. Our projects cover a wide array of engineering applications, so students can usually find an appealing project. We strongly discourage the practice of  friends 'buddying up' and submitting identical project choices: That practice short-circuits the notion of choosing projects based on best fit with your individual aptitude and interests.
    • Be proactive. If you REALLY want a certain project, make that obvious by generating a detailed, enthusiastic, and convincing 'mini-resume' to support your top choice(s).
    • If you don't get your preferred project: No whining! Dig in to the project assigned, meet your group, participate enthusiastically, work hard but make it fun - and remember that all projects have interesting and challenging aspects.

    1. Use the D2L Drop Box to submit your top 10 project choices from the list on the course website. TWO documents must be submitted:

    2. (a) Rank your requests in-order using the EXCEL form on the D2L site. That document is posted as a NEWS ITEM attachment on the EMEC/ETME 489 site. You must use this formatted document! Follow directions stated on that document.
      (b) Submit your brief mini-resume with any pertinent information that might influence our assignment to a group, such as prior experience or strong preferences. (Use WORD or PDF format.) Provide a working email address.

Any students who have not submitted a request will be assigned to undersubscribed groups.

Design group assignments will be posted to the PROJECTS page as soon as the rosters are finalized

At the close of the semester, all groups should have completed preparations to enable component fabrication to begin promptly next Semester:

  • The component and system designs should be completed, and well-documented with an accurate and professionally-prepared engineering drawing set.
  • The chosen design should be backed up with a thorough and correct analysis.
  • Orders for ALL required parts and materials should have been submitted.
  • A complete manufacturing plan should be ready for implementation.
  • Your Sponsor must be on-board, and your Faculty Advisor should be in-the-loop and supportive of the next steps.

If your group cannot claim these milestones by the end of the term, your project is in jeopardy.
Work smart to ensure you are poised for success in the upcoming semester!

Have a great break, and be safe...
