Education:

  • B.A., Magna cum Laude in History, Gonzaga University, 1962
  • PhD., American Studies (History), Washington State University, 1966


Family:

  • Married to Kathleen Malone with two children, three stepchildren and six grandchildren.

As President:

  • Serves as President, Montana State University-Bozeman (1990-present).
  • Serves as President of Montana State University with campuses in Bozeman, Billings, Havre and Great Falls (1994-present).
  • Serves on the Commission on Colleges of the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges.
  • Serves on the Board of Directors of the National Association of State Universities and Land Grant Colleges, the oldest and largest higher education association.

As Historian:

  • Is currently under contract with Yale University Press for a book on the historiography of western America.
  • Has served as Assistant, Associate and Full Professor of History at Montana State University-Bozeman (1967-present)
  • Has authored or co-authored eight books, including Montana: A Contemporary  Profile (1997); James J. Hill: Empire Builder of the Northwest (1996); The American West: A Twentieth Century History (1989) a History Book Club main selection; The Battle for Butte: Mining and Politics on the Northern Frontier (1981) winner of the Emil and Kathleen Sick Award for Western History; and  Montana - a History of Two Centuries (1976, 1991) a standard text on the topic.
  • Has authored over twenty articles and book chapters, presented papers to numerous learned societies and written book reviews in a dozen academic journals and several popular journals.
  • Won the Western History Association’s Oscar O. Winter Award for the best article of the year, 1990.
  • Was named an outstanding alumnus of both Washington State University and Gonzaga University.

As Citizen:

  • Served on the Montana Historical Society Board of Directors (1977-1989).
  • Served on the Montana Committee for Humanities (1984-1987).
  • Served on Museum of the Rockies Board of Trustees (1977-83 and 88-99).
  • Served on the Montana Bicentennial Commission (1974-1976).
  • Served on Buttrey Food and Drug Company Board of Directors (1992-99).
