2008 Student Ivie English (Spanish student) received the Sue Burton Cannon Memorial Award; 2008. This award is given to the outstanding Junior female student in a Modern Languages class and is based on service to the Department of Modern Languages, academic performance, and service outside the Department.
Student Mark Lehman (Spanish Teaching major) received the Steven L. Johnson Memorial Scholarship; 2008. This award is given to the outstanding Spanish Teaching major. It not only recognizes academic success, but quality of character as well, reflecting the esteem of teachers and peers in the department.

-- Jessica Potter (2nd major in Spanish) Student Keese Lane (graduate in German & Political Science) will be participating in
an English teaching assistantship program sponsored by the Austrian Fulbright
Commission. He will be working in Elixhausen, which is 6k north of
Salzburg. Keese will work for three English teachers at the Höhere
Bundeslehranstalt für Landwirtschaft, an agricultural boarding school for people
who want to work in the agricultural fields. He will be teaching for 8 months
there, working with students in their late teens. Congratulations, Keese!
Student Cathy Heidner (graduate
in secondary education & German) received a Fulbright grant to teach English in
Germany. She will spend 10 months as a teacher's assistant in Saxony, a
German state in the eastern part of the country. Read the

Patty Simpson, Associate Professor of German Studies, recently
returned from an invited lecture at the University of Georgia, Athens, where she
participated in a conference on the "Meaning of Culture" and spoke about her
book project, Cultures of Violence in the New German Street. Simpson has also been invited to
participate in an editorial workshop in London this summer, 2008.

Student Tara Reising (Spanish Teaching major) received the Steven L. Johnson Memorial Scholarship; 2007. This award is given to the outstanding Spanish Teaching major. It not only recognizes academic success, but quality of character as well, reflecting the esteem of teachers and peers in the department.
Student Claire Wing was named MSU Rotary Student of the Month for February. This award is give to honor high academic achievement and community involvement.
Patty Simpson was elected to serve on the Executive Committee of the German Studies Association. Her three-year term begins in 2008. In addition, she was elected to serve as the division delegate for the Modern Language Association for Late 18th and Early 19th Century German Literature.
Patty Simpson released her book The Erotics of War in German Romanticism
in 2007, published by Bucknell University Press (2007), ISBN 978-083875662X.
Patricia Catoira is the recipient of an Award for Excellence,
2007. This award is given by MSU's Alumni Association and the Bozeman Area Chamber of Commerce for exceptional guidance and inspiration.
Bridget Kevane received the President's Award for Excellence in Service Learning for her Supervised Practicum
course and two courses in volunteerism, 2007.
Rima Joseph and Rebecca Roland have moved on to other endeavors... We wish them both the best!
Ari Blatt has moved on to a faculty position at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, VA. We wish him the best!

Yuka Hara was awarded the Mortor Board Professor of the Month for January 2006.
Carolyn Pinet was the winner of a 2006 Alumni Association/Chamber of Commerce Award for Excellence. This award signifies exceptional student guidance and mentorship.
Carolyn Leavengood and David Schrupp, both Adjunct Instructors in German, retired at the end of the 2005-2006 school year... We hope you enjoy your retirement!
Student Katie Baldwin (second major in German) received an Adell & Hancock Fund Scholarship from the Institute of International Education, 2006. She used this $2400 award to do research while she was studying in Germany during the next school year.
Students Megan Seaton and Bridget Mullins, both Spanish majors, received Student of Achievement Awards from the Women's Center; 2006. This award is given to students who have demonstrated leadership abilities, have worked towards promoting diversity and equality, have excelled in their school work, have exhibited excellent team building skills and have been strong role models for their peers.

Student Erica Dobbs (second major in Spanish) received an MSU Alumni Association / Chamber of Commerce Award for Excellence, 2005-06. This award signifies exceptional achievement, both academically and in community leadership, over a student's entire college career.
Student Heidi Harriman (a 2005 graduate in German) received a Fulbright Teaching Assistantship in Düsseldorf, Germany for the 2005-06 academic year. She taught English to German high-schoolers and studying at the University of Düsseldorf.
Student Jayme Kreitinger (Spanish major) was awarded a $5,000 Gilman scholarship to study abroad for the 2005-2006 academic year at Al Akhawayn University in Ifrane, Morocco. She had two semesters of Arabic through MSU's Arabic Distance Learning Program and continued her Arabic language studies in Morocco at Al Akhawayn University.
Student James Murray (second major in German) won a DAAD Scholarship (German Academic Exchange Service) that paid for travel and living expenses while he attended the University of Tubingen in Germany during the 2005-06 school year. Student Jennifer Lindberg (Japan Studies Minor) taught English in Japan during the 2005-06 year through the Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Program. She was located in the Hokkaido prefecture while she was teaching.

Jack Jelinski, Professor Emeritus of Spanish, recently published a book of poetry: Water like the Soul of an Angel: Memoirs of a Fisherman.
Article about student Matt Wilson (Spanish major), a world-class kayaker who runs a kayak school and youth program here in Bozeman. He was studying abroad at the Universidad de Veracruz in Mexico when the article was published.
Student Amy Hartman (Spanish) works at the oncology floor at Providence Portland Hospital, OR. She combined her degrees in nursing and Spanish to help patients with limited English-speaking abilities.
Student Janice Shewey is now a graduate student in Hispanic Studies.
Student Jodie Deignan teaches ESL for Spanish-speaking teens as part of Crossing Borders Consulting.
2004
MSU students teach Spanish to elementary school students in the Bozeman Public Schools.
MSU's Arabic Language Program received a grant to expand to other universities across the country and previously won a national award.
