Any great university is built, not of bricks and concrete as is oftentimes believed, but of soaring ideas, of a fusion of thought, dedicated teaching and learning that is transforming.
And so it is with Montana State University, an institution evolving remarkably in so many areas. I have been so pleased with the progress of the institution over the last few years that I wish to share the university's story with you in this, the inaugural issue of Mountains and Minds magazine.
In addition to being the university's official tagline, Mountains and Minds summarizes what we stand for -- intellectual excellence in a spectacular educational setting. It is our hope that this publication mirrors our essence, reflecting the vibrant blend of ideas, knowledge and creative endeavors that are MSU as well as this wonderful Montana landscape that we call home.
In the following pages you will learn of MSU's recent inclusion into the elite Carnegie Foundation's top 100 research universities in the country. You will read of service by our students that knows no boundaries, research that is changing the world, and a faculty ever-striving to find creative ways to disseminate knowledge. You wil discover how MSU's transforming teaching and research defines us as University of the YellowstoneSM. You will also read of alumni and friends who are taking our lessons across the globe in important ways. We will detail upcoming projects that are helping the university evolve in this new century. On a related note, the MSU Foundation's leadership is in the early stages of planning the first true comprehensive campaign for the university. You will hear more about that in the near future.
It is our wish that this magazine will enlighten, entertain and engage you. We also hope that it will convey to you the heart of what is MSU today.
Sincerely,
Geoff Gamble, president
