Oxford bound

Brian Johnsrud of Big Sandy was selected as one of 32 recipients of a 2007 Rhodes Scholarship, considered to be one of the world's most prestigious fellowships.

The 2006 English graduate with a passion for everything medieval, was selected for the Rhodes Scholarship from nearly 900 applicants from 340 colleges and universities around the country. The scholars, considered to be among the brightest minds in the nation, will study for two years at the colleges that make up Oxford University in England.

Johnsrud is MSU's fourth Rhodes Scholar since 1974, and the first since Chelsea Elander of Missoula won the Rhodes in 2000. Other recent MSU recipients include Jennifer DeVoe of Helena, a recipient in 1995 while she was a student at Harvard Medical School; and Maurice Burke, now an MSU math professor.

MSU rises to top tier of research universities

MSU is now in the top tier of research universities in the United States.

Last year a new classification system by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching recognized MSU as one of 94 research universities with "very high research activity." Other such institutions are Yale University, Harvard University, Johns Hopkins University and the University of Washington, among others. MSU's expenditures from sponsored research programs reached $103 million last year.

Lutz, Agre-Kippenhan tapped to lead MSU colleges

Paula Lutz and Susan Agre-Kippenhan are MSU's two newest deans.

Lutz will begin duties July 1 as the dean of MSU's College of Letters and Science. A biologist actively researching the effects of lead on children's immune systems, she is the current dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Missouri-Rolla.

Susan Agre-Kippenhan joined MSU in the summer as dean of the College of Arts and Architecture. A practicing graphic designer, she came from Portland State University, where she was chair of the Department of Art.

Bobcat gridders make Division I-AA quarterfinals

For the first time in more than two decades, the MSU Bobcats advanced to the NCAA Division I-AA football quarterfinals, losing to eventual champion Appalachian State 38-17 in Boone, N.C. It is the first time that the Bobcats have advanced beyond the preliminary round in the playoffs since winning the championship in 1984.
