Back in the early months of 1907, a one hundred year legacy began at what was then the Montana Agricultural College. That spring, students and faculty formally began the existence of a band. Directed by Louis Howard, a famed musician and teacher of much history, the band performed for the first time that spring in an effort to raise money for future music programs.
Louis Howard’s band became the foundation of music at the school, later giving birth to other ensembles. These ensembles include The ROTC Band, The Regimental Band, Jazz Bands, various Marching Bands, and the Wind Ensemble.
A strong and popular voice across campus, the bands have reflected much of the change and essence of Montana State. Above all, these are student organizations. Nearly every other college and department in the University is represented by students in the bands.
The bands have been an essential piece of representing the University to the nation. Performances at away football games, regional tours, regional competitions, College Bowl Games, NFL Football Games and the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade have all spread far and wide the name of the bands at Montana State University.
The Spirit of the West Marching Band, the Jazz Ensembles, Wind Ensemble and University Band are all proud to continue the tradition of band at Montana State University and serve as the foundation of another successful 100 years.
