MSU Tomorrow Department Specific Followup Meetings

The following comments were received during department specific meetings, held after the public forums. The views and opinions expressed are for data information purposes and do not represent or indicate an approved formal direction for the University's Long Range Campus Development Plan.

Architecture

MSU should move away from open floor plans, to decrease noise.

We should connect buildings through tunnel system for weather protection.

MSU needs more high tech. classrooms.

top

Campus Character

MSU should purchase Greek House to allow expansion to the southeast.

MSU should acquire land northeast of campus.

The Climate Research Center should be located west of 19th.

Veterinary Molecular Biology prefers location in campus core; could possibly become part of the Agricultural
        Research Center.

Administrative growth could possibly be accommodated in Leon Johnson.

A new Science complex could possibly be located on the east side of campus.

BioSafety Labs II and III could possibly be located in the Agricultural Research Center.  They need a buffer
        zone around them.

Classroom growth could be accommodated by renovating Romney, Cooley and Lewis and expanding the
       footprint of Sherrick Hall.

MSU should offer night classes in the campus core.

MSU should cluster academic departments in the campus core.

MSU should expand the library by 50% in the 25 year plan.

The Entrepreneur Center should be located west of 19th, as a buffer area to biocontainment facility.

MSU needs centralized, high tech. training space.

MSU should expand IT space, outside the library.

MSU should consolidate divisions into academic neighborhoods.

We should renovate Montana Hall, in order to restore our heritage.

We should increase Montana Hall by 50%, in order to decompress office space.

MSU should consolidate student services offices (possibly in AJM, Linfield or the SUB).

MSU should expand H & PE in order to accommodate a pool.

Teaching elements of the agriculture program must remain in close proximity to campus.  Pure research
could relocate, possibly west of 19th.

The student center should be an energetic space, with a central location, possibly connected to the library.

A new Business Building needs to be located in the campus core.

Avoid sprawl.
We would like to see more gathering spaces in university facilities (indoor and outdoor).

MSU should provide comfortable student spaces and should encourage a sense of community and sense of
        place.

The campus should have distinct entries and perimeter, but shouldn't close off the community.

A new Energy Science Building needs to be located in the campus core, possibly in the Southeast section of
        campus.

The campus should be open and inviting - create a sense of community.

Athletic facilities should be located outside the campus core, perhaps south of Kagy.

MSU should provide an indoor facility for intramural/club sports.

We need Sports Facilities storage near the Fieldhouse, three to four times the size of existing storage.

There's a growing need for club/intramural space.  We would like to see two large soccer/rugby type fields,
4-6 softball fields with lights and a turf field allowing year round use.

top

Housing

The Health Center should be expanded.  It should be centrally located and close to residence halls.

A community center, with retail/laundry/daycare space, should be located near student housing (possibly
       near Grant Chamberlain).

New student housing should be located close to academic areas, and clustered to make them easier to
       maintain and service.

A retirement community should be developed west of 19th.  A community center and water amenities
should be part of the development.

MSU needs a Central Food Services preparation/warehouse facility.  It doesn't need to be centrally located,
but needs loading dock facilities and good traffic access.

Paisley and Grant Chamberlain should be renovated.

The bungalows should be replaced with other 2-3 bedroom units, possibly west of 19th.  It might also be
desirable to increase density around Grant Chamberlain.

Operate Greek housing through Auxiliaries.

Landscaping

MSU should create a memorable landscape.

MSU should celebrate our history/culture/environment with a garden of native plants.

MSU should have less, but better maintained, green space.

Make landscaping a required element of building projects.

Provide tree lined streets and a sense of campus on the south side.

top

Maintenance

MSU's pedestrian campus needs to accommodate service corridors.

top

Open Spaces

The fields between Lincoln and Garfield should be relocated west of 19th.

MSU should interconnect new green spaces with existing green spaces.

MSU should consider a land purchase program for lands south of Lincoln.

Green space is critical near housing areas.
MSU should provide pavilions with picnic facilities near playing fields.  New student housing needs playing fields, green spaces, and play areas.

Open space buffer zones are needed for agriculture and research.

top

Parking

MSU should increase parking on campus and relocate student cars.

Projects should be required to address parking issues.

The Student Health Center needs parking access and emergency vehicle access.

Parking for student housing is an issue.

top

Partnering

MSU needs more clean room space, more vibration controlled space, more high bay research space, more
incubator space and more MSU-private partnership space.

MSU should partner with the community to develop a Performing Arts Center.

A Hotel Conference Center should be developed, as a partnership/lease with a private organization.

A new Solar Observatory could possibly be located west of 19th.  It would need top of the line campus IT.

The new USGS facility should have an intermediate location relative to campus.  It could potentially be part
       of the Agriculture Research Center.

A central location is needed for Tech Transfer facilities.

Miltech, TechLink, MMEC and related functions should be located together.

MSU should address power issues.

Softball and soccer fields should be developed, in partnership with the community.

Security

MSU should provide an open and inviting campus, but address security concerns.  We may need card
