34th Annual
Christopher Parkening Master Class
July 22-26, 2008
The Department of Music at Montana State University-Bozeman is once again proud to offer the 34th Annual Christopher Parkening Master Class for Classical Guitarists . This unique summer master class offers instructional opportunities to soloists and ensemble performers. In conjunction with the master class, seminars covering “How to Learn a Piece of Music from the First Day” and “Technical and Musical Confidence with the Guitar”will be offered by John Sutherland and Mastering Classical Guitar Sound Production by Scott Bach.
Auditors of the master class are welcomed and encouraged to participate in the master class events, the seminars, and take advantage of the opportunity to study privately with teaching assistant John Sutherland.

Guest Artist Concert
Pablo Sáinz Villegas,
Pablo Sáinz Villegas, winner of the inaugural Christopher Parkening International Guitar Competitionin 2006, has quickly established himself as one of the world’s leading classical guitarists. He returns by great demand, as special guest artist to the master class with a reprise performance. He has performed in over twenty countries on such prestigious stages as New York’s Carnegie Hall, Moscow’s Tchaikovsky Concert Hall and Milan’s Sala Verdi. Recipient of more than twenty-eight international awards including the “Andrés Segovia” award, Mr. Sáinz Villegas has appeared as soloist with the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, the Canberra Symphony Orchestra, the New York Virtuosi Chamber Symphony, Orchestra I Pomerigi Musicali and Orquesta de Radio Televisión Española, among others. He has participated in renowned international festivals in Brasilia, Granada and Strasbourg, and has worked with prominent composers including George Crumb, Cristóbal Halffter and Helmut Lachenmann. Pablo Sáinz Villegas has recorded Luciano Berio’s monumental Sequenze XI on the Naxos label and has released a CD of Spanish music on the same label that features the world premiere recordings of Five Anecdotes by Andrés Segovia and Sonata-Fantasia by Federico Moreno-Torroba. The recording was selected “CD of the Week” by “Musik Heute” magazine.

Enrollment
All applicants for student status must submit an unedited 10-minute DVD recording (this includes former Master Class students). Exception: former students who were selected to perform in the closing Master Class Student Recital need not submit an audition recording. Completed applications for student status must be received no later than April 1st, 2008 in order to be considered for the class. Ensembles (i.e. guitar and flute; guitar and violin, etc.) are welcome to apply for student status.

Housing
Dormitory-style housing is available to registered master class participants. The cost is $26.00 per night for a single room and $21.00 per person per night for a shared room. Housing must be reserved ON-LINE at:

The Christopher Parkening Master Class provides a unique experience for all students and lovers of the classical guitar.
