As an educator, he has been a regular faculty member at Stanford Jazz Workshop (SJW) since 1991. From 2006 to 2008, Kohler served as the Education Director for the SJW workshop. From 2009 to 2011, he helped to design and implement a successful middle school jazz program at the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts and continues as a regular clinician there. His greatly anticipated Jazz Theory Book Volume I was released in July 2013, and has been well received.
