Captains (Drumline, Color Guard)

Description

The captains are akin to “super section leaders.” They have all of the responsibilities of section leader, but have the additional duty of organizing, teaching, and creating for their sections. The demands of these positions are greater than that of a section leader because the drumline and colorguard are either/both larger than the other sections in the band and have specific performance requirements. Please see the description of section leader for more information.

Priorities of the Position (in order of importance):

  1. Design/teach choreograph/music
  2. See to the needs of the section (inform, administrate, and support)
  3. Reinforce marching/playing/spinning technique and lead sectionals
  4. Focus section during rehearsals (serve as model member)
  5. Represent your section in leadership meetings

Selection Process

The Captain position is similar to that of section leader expect with an emphasis on coordination and teaching at a level beyond what is expected of section leaders. For this reason, the selection process will include a demonstration of teaching in addition to performing. For the Color Guard, a demonstration of choreography design may also be included.

The directors will decide upon the best candidate(s) for captain based upon the following criteria:

  1. Skills, attitude, participation in past season(s)
  2. Information on leadership application
  3. Performance demonstration
  4. Teaching demonstration
  5. Choreography design (guard only)
  6. Panel Interview Performance Audition
  7. Feedback from band members
