Facilities
Computer Lab
This is the classroom for Music Technology courses and the gathering place for musical collaboration. This lab is staffed by student monitors and available during open hours to all students taking courses in the Department of Music. The Computer Lab houses both Macs and PCs with Digidesign MBox2 audio interfaces and MIDI keyboards, an additional Korg keyboard synthesizer, Yamaha mixing board, Tannoy speakers, Tascam FW-1884 audio interface, Epson projector, and a brand-new HP printer.
The "bread and butter" music software programs used in the first-year Music Technology sequence are: Digidesign Pro Tools LE, Apple Logic, Steinberg Cubase Studio, Propellerheads Reason, BIAS Peak LE, and Finale notation software.
Also available in the lab: Sibelius, SoundHack, Ableton Live, GarageBand, iLife (iTunes, iDVD, iMovie), East/West Symphonic sample library, MacGAMUT ear-training software, and more.
MONSTER Pro Studio
This room is the primary individual workspace for upper-level Music Technology students. Hardware available includes: 5.1 Dynaudio monitoring system, Soundcraft mixing board, Digidesign and Tascam audio interfaces, keyboard synths, and a wide array of microphones. Mac Pro software includes all of the "bread and butter" programs from the Computer Lab (Pro Tools LE, Cubase Studio, Reason, Peak LE, and Finale), plus Reaktor, MetaSynth, Logic, Waves Gold Bundle, Final Cut Studio, Arturia ARP2600V, Native Instruments Komplete, Adobe After Effects, East/West Symphonic sample library, and more.
Baby MONSTER Studio
This room adds additional individual workspace for upper-level Music Technology students. Macintosh software duplicates the Big MONSTER Studio. Hardware includes: Digidesign Mbox2 audio interface, Event studio monitors, Mackie mixing board, and Korg X50 keyboard synth.
El Niño Studio
Cookie MONSTER Studio
These are clones of Baby MONSTER with Mackie HR824 MK2 monitors and JBL LSR4328P monitors, respectively.
Tracking Room
The tracking room features a digital 24 channel Presonus board. A Mac Pro configured with a variety of major Digital Audio Workstations (DAW's) ensures that the recording experience transfers across multiple platforms.
Student designed and built acoustic treatment is installed throughout the room. This adaptable treatment provides control over the sonic footprint and creates an adjustable and customizable acoustic space, allowing the room to be tuned as needed for various recording situations.
High quality studio monitors provide instant playback for musicians allowing them to evaluate their performances. A large video monitor allows visual connection with the lab, as well as a large display for classes and demonstrations.
Reynolds Recital Hall
Reynolds Recital Hall is the main performance space for the Department of Music and home of the Sunday Night Multimedia Series, our new concert series combining electronic music, multichannel audio and sound diffusion, video, animation, and live performance. The Sunday Night Multimedia Series was founded by Kristi McGarity in the fall of 2006, and regularly features an international selection of multimedia works including compositions by MSU students. The Multimedia Series features a multi-speaker sound diffusion system with Dynaudio, JBL, and Event speakers, MOTU Traveler audio interfaces, and an Allen & Heath mixing board for live diffusion.
Major upgrades to Reynolds Recital Hall were completed in the summer of 2007, including a smart podium and built-in projector for large lecture classes and an upgraded built-in sound system including JBL AM6215 speakers, QSC amplifiers, and a BSS Audio Soundweb DSP unit, with BSS Soundweb Designer software running on a Mac Mini via Parallels.
Black Box Theater
The new Black Box Theater, part of the School of Film and Photography, was completed in 2008. Music Tech students have contributed music and sound design for Black Box productions starting with the inaugural production in October 2008. Starting in Spring 2009, a new Interdisciplinary Projects class allows Music Tech and Film majors to study hands-on technical theater, focusing on lighting design and sound design for theatrical productions and multimedia concerts, including the May Sunday Night Multimedia Series.
Peach Street Studios
Peach Street Studios hosts two courses for the Music Technology program. MUST 112 - Basic Home Recording, taught by Doc Wiley, and MUST 320 - Recording 2, taught by Jeremiah Slovarp, began meeting at Peach Street Studios in 2011. Music Technology majors and non-majors gain valuable hands-on experience in a working professional studio. Peach Street Studios is also home to several Music Technology Internship placements.
