MSU begins Music Day tradition on high note

Music Day, a celebration of music on the MSU campus set for Thursday, March 8, will premiere on a sweet note.

The highlight of the day-long celebration will be a rare campus concert by the Bozeman Symphony under the direction of Matthew Savery at 8 p.m. in the SUB ballrooms.

"It should be a fun event for everyone," said Greg Young, who has been head of the music department since July. "A true collaboration of town and gown."

Young said his staff wanted to heighten the awareness of the music department on campus, but also wanted the campus to be aware of the level of music in the community.

"We thought, what better way to do that than to invite the Bozeman Symphony to campus," Young said. He said the intent is to make the symphony accessible to students, so tickets will be a nominal ticket fee of $5 in advance, $6 at the door, instead of usual symphony ticket prices ranging up to $40. Tickets will be available on campus at the Ask Us information desk, 994-4636 and at the Department of Music, 994-4641.

In the spirit of the lighthearted event, the symphony, under the direction of Matthew Savery, will perform dressed in jeans and tee-shirts.

MSU music professor Johan Jonsson will be the violin soloist for the Vivaldi movement from the "Seasons." A native of Sweden, Jonsson is artistic director and co-founder of the String Orchestra of the Rockies and concertmaster of the Bozeman Symphony, the Intermountain Opera Orchestra and Montana Ballet. Other selections will include Brahms, Shostakovich, Nino Rota, and Rossini.

All proceeds from the concert, which is sponsored by ASMSU and the MSU Music Department, with support by First Interstate Bank and ERA Landmark Real Estate, will go to the MSU student performing ensembles for recruiting and performing at high schools in the region.

All other events during the day are free. Performances are scheduled throughout the day in the SUB and in Reynolds Recital Hall. Some of the scheduled concerts include performances by the MSU jazz bands in the SUB at lunch, as well performances by the Montanans and the MSU Chamber Orchestra.

Young said Music Day is hoped to be an annual affair.

"And this year it should be a great send-off for spring break," he said.
