Montana State University's news director has been appointed interim director of external relations to serve as the university's primary liaison on state legislative matters, the university announced today.

Tracy Ellig will take the post previously held by Doug Steele, who is headed to Texas A&M University to serve as director of Texas A&M AgriLife Extension, the Texas equivalent of MSU Extension. In his interim role, Ellig will represent MSU at the 2013 Montana Legislature.

Ellig has worked in University Communications since 2006, first as writer covering the MSU College of Engineering and then as director of the MSU News Service since 2008. The MSU News Service is the primary liaison between the university and the media.

"In his university communications role, Tracy has gained a broad and deep understanding of the many facets of the university and our 119-year mission of public service," said MSU President Waded Cruzado. "He ably and articulately represents our efforts to help students succeed and improve the lives of Montanans through research and outreach."

Ellig is a Montana native and MSU alumnus with a bachelor's degree in philosophy. He had an 11-year career as a print journalist in Montana, Idaho and Washington before returning to Bozeman and joining the university.
