Tracy Ellig, director of the Montana State University News Service and interim executive director of external relations, has been named the university’s executive director of University Communications, university officials announced Wednesday. Ellig will assume his new responsibilities immediately.
As executive director, Ellig, 44, will oversee the units involved in Web design, marketing, news, graphics, business and community relations, printing and MontanaPBS. He will also serve as the university's chief spokesman to the media. He will report directly to the president.
“During his tenure at MSU over the last eight years, Tracy's work has been characterized by his indefatigable dedication and excellence,” said MSU President Waded Cruzado. “Through his devotion to the institution and his profession, he has earned the trust and respect of his colleagues at Montana State University as well as the many constituencies we serve.”
Ellig has worked in University Communications since 2006, first as a writer covering the MSU College of Engineering and then as director of the MSU News Service since 2008. The MSU News Service is the primary liaison between the university and the media. In August, Ellig was appointed interim director of external relations to serve as the university's primary liaison on state legislative matters.
“I’m humbled by this appointment. MSU is an amazing university and it is a pleasure to tell the stories of accomplishment of our students, faculty and staff through the voice of University Communications,” Ellig said. “I look forward to continuing to work with all my outstanding colleagues across the university and the inspiring students we have at MSU.”
Ellig is a Bozeman native and MSU alumnus with a bachelor's degree in philosophy. He had an 11-year career as a print journalist in Montana, Idaho and Washington before returning to Bozeman and joining the university.
Ellig succeeds Tom Calcagni, who left the university in April.
