BOZEMAN – U.S. Senator Max Baucus will receive recognition for being a friend to the Montana State University College of Agriculture and the Montana Agricultural Experiment Station.

Baucus will be receive the Friend of the College of Agriculture and the Montana Agricultural Experiment Station Award at MSU’s Strand Union Building on Friday, Oct. 25, during the College of Agriculture’s 15th annual Celebrate Agriculture!! event on Friday, Oct. 25. Baucus will receive the award at 2:25 p.m., as part of an all-day economic outlook conference hosted by the Department of Agricultural Economics.

As chairman of the Senate Finance Committee and a senior member of the Senate Agricultural Committee, Sen. Baucus has used his leadership positions to influence federal policy that directly affects Montana's agricultural economy, according to Glenn Duff, interim dean and director of the MSU College of Agriculture and the Montana Agricultural Experiment Station.

Duff said that during Baucus' time as a congressional delegate, he has helped to shape trade policy, farm bill development and regulatory issues that directly impact Montana’s agricultural producers. In his role as Finance Committee chairman, Baucus has also advocated for breaking down international trade barriers. In addition, he has helped write six federal farm bills, and next week he will begin negotiations as one of 12 senators appointed to the joint Farm Bill Conference Committee, which will try reconcile House and Senate versions of the farm legislation.

Duff added that Baucus has been more than a friend to Montana’s agricultural community.

“Senator Baucus has been a champion for Montana State University’s College of Agriculture and Montana Agricultural Experiment Station,” Duff said. “Baucus’s support for agriculture has benefitted producers in the state, as well as researchers at MSU.”

The Friend of the College of Agriculture and the Montana Agricultural Experiment Station Award honors someone who is respected in the agricultural community, is an industry leader and is an advocate on behalf of Montana producers, whether in the private or public sector.
