BOZEMAN – Montana State University Extension in Gallatin County will hold a three-hour workshop on March 6 on the use of pesticides in greenhouses and how to manage greenhouses pests.
The workshop will start in Room 134 of the Animal BioSciences Building and then move to the Plant Growth Center for hands-on learning.
Cecil Tharp, MSU Extension pesticide education specialist, will discuss greenhouse applicator safety and education. Because applicators are at an elevated risk to pesticide poisoning due to high rates of exposure, Tharp will discuss minimizing exposure through the proper use of personal protective equipment, following restricted-entry intervals, and understanding the characteristics of pesticide products.
Laurie Kerzicnik, MSU insect diagnostician and assistant integrated pest management specialist, will discuss greenhouse pests and their management, including pests such as aphids, whiteflies, thrips, fungus gnats and spider mites, as well as biological, chemical controls and alternatives to chemical controls.
David Baumbauer, MSU Plant Growth Center manager and horticulture instructor, will guide a hands-on portion of the workshop with greenhouse pesticide application technology and techniques to improve pesticide effectiveness. Participants can test high-, low-, and ultra-low volume sprayers and learn tips to improve spray coverage.
You do not need a private or commercial applicator pesticide license to attend, but workshop participants can receive three Montana private applicator recertification credits or two recertification credits for commercial and governmental applicators holding licenses in the following categories: dealer, demonstration & research pest control, ornamental and turf pest control, agricultural plant pest control, and aquatic pest control.
The cost of the workshop is $10, payable by check or cash to Gallatin County Extension by Monday, March 3.
