Keith Kothman, professor of music theory and composition at Ball State University in Muncie, Ind., and a composer and sound artist, has been selected as the director of the Montana State University School of Music.

Nancy Cornwell, dean of the College of Arts and Architecture, said that Kothman, who has been a professor of music for two decades at both Ball State and the University of Miami, will provide solid leadership to the MSU school. She said because of the scores of public performances throughout the year by members of the school’s faculty and students, Kothman will have significant contact with the Bozeman community.

“Dr. Kothman will contribute at a high level to teaching and creative excellence at the School of Music,” Cornwell said. “I look forward to working with him in support of faculty efforts to expand their impact and contribution to the MSU mission through engaging, high quality teaching and outreach, as well as through continued creative and scholarly excellence.”

Kothman holds a doctorate in music from the University of California, San Diego. He has both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music from the University of Texas at Austin. His research and creative work focuses on electro-acoustic composition. While at Ball State, he served as coordinator of undergraduate programs in music, director of the Music Technology Program and as a faculty fellow with the Institute for Digital Intermedia Arts.

Kothman has served as director of conferences for the Society for Electro-Acoustic Music in the United States. In 2004, he received an honorable mention at the 31st Bourges International Competition of Electro-Acoustic Music and Sound Art. He has performed across the U.S., Europe and South America.  His work is available on CD via the Albany, Capstone, and Cambria labels.

"I'm very excited to be joining Montana State University, the School of Music, and the College of Arts and Architecture,” Kothman said. “The School of Music is strong, dynamic and growing. The faculty and students that I've met are an exceptionally talented group."

Kothman will begin his duties at MSU on July 1.
