Frequently Asked Questions
Are the classes all online?
Yes, so you will need to have a computer system with
relatively recent word processing software, a browser that are capable of
interfacing with the WebCT course management software (additional
information available here), and reliable access to an internet
connection.
You will also need to be relatively technically competent
to engage in, and successfully complete our online courses. Please take this
Technical Skills Survey (as a self-assessment only) to get an idea of
where you stand in terms of your technical preparation.
Does tuition expense depend on residency in Montana?
No, the tuition is a flat rate per credit (i.e. no
difference between resident and non-resident costs).
Do I need to have a Math or Science degree to be
accepted?
No, you will need to meet certain credit requirements (as
well as some specific class requirements) in order to be licensed in any of
the given content areas
MSU endorses students in. However, fewer non-science and math applicants
are accepted due to the reduced need for teachers endorsed in those areas.
Some other endorsement areas (Music, Modern Languages and English) do also
tend to be needed at steady rates.
Applicants with degrees outside of the content
endorsement areas may also qualify based on the content knowledge and
standards required for degree completion. For example, mechanical
engineering majors may have enough Math credits to be licensed as Math
teachers; electrical engineers may have the content background to be
endorsed in both physics and math, etc..
Can you make substitutions for classes on the
Teacher Education Preparation Program (TEPP) forms?
Yes, if the class you are wishing to substitute covers
the same general information.
When do I pay for the program?
As you register for each class.
Can I receive financial aid for the classes?
Yes. Several of our participants have applied for FAFSA
and have been awarded financial aid. To be eligible for federal financial
aid you must be registered for a minimum of six credits during the academic
semester(s) you are requesting financial aid for.
What are beginning salaries for teachers in Montana,
South Dakota and Wyoming?
Each school district negotiates its own pay scale with
the state teachers union, so it is hard to give a concise answer.
Additionally, some districts are more or less willing to “bump” new teachers
up on the scale based on teaching related experience they may have.
Comprehensive information on teacher salaries (2002-2003 data), to include
average starting salaries, can be found at
http://aft.org/salary/index.htm. Also keep in mind that holding a masters
degree increases annual salary approximately $2,000/year on average (in
Montana).
How long do I have to find a job after being accepted
into the program?
You will need to find at least .5 FTE employment in a
school teaching within your endorsement area after the initial three
"qualification" courses (EDCI 552, EDCI 553 and EDCI 554) in order to
continue in and complete the NPTT licensure program.
What happens if I only complete one or two years at a
high needs school and I accepted the scholarship?
We will then prorate the amount that is owed the program
and bill you for that amount.
Could my spouse or significant other also go through
the program?
Yes, as long as they meet our admission requirements.
However, there is no guarantee that you will be hired in the same district
or even a district close by. We have had couples that have managed to be
hired together, but we cannot guarantee it.
How many
classes
are taken at a time?
In general courses are taken one at a time with a week or
two between courses. However, in some cases there will be limited overlap
between courses and/or no time between courses. See the
tentative
course schedules for additional information.
How long does each class last?
Most of the classes are eight (8) weeks in length.
However, the first course, EDCI 552 is a 10 week course, and the Internship
I and Internship II courses are 12 weeks long.
Can I transfer in other education classes?
Not really. Our classes are specifically designed to be
integrated parts of the programmatic puzzle, so that each one must be taken.
Can I get my
master’s
degree in education?
Yes, with two extra classes (not listed on the website)
you can earn your
Master of
Education in Curriculum & Instruction.
What teaching license will I have when I complete the
program?
You will have a standard teaching license in the state of
Montana, South Dakota or Wyoming, depending on the state you are teaching
in, upon completion. This is the same license earned with a four year
education degree.
Will this license have reciprocity with other states?
Yes…mostly. Most states have some reciprocity with other
state licenses/certificates. However, many states do impose their own
peculiarities on those coming in with a license/certificate from another
state. To avoid unpleasant surprises down the line (if you intend to teach
in a state other than one currently partnered with us), it is worth your
time to thoroughly investigate the reciprocity rules of the state you hope
to teach in. You can also check the NASDTEC
web site for information on interstate agreements.
Can I pick where I get placed?
Yes, we can not force you to accept a position in a given
district/location, nor can we force a given district to hire you. After you
finish the first 3 classes and get your Class 5 Alternative license (or
comparable license/certification in SD or WY), we will assist you in your
job search and have agreements with numerous districts indicating that they
will agree to consider our candidates for any appropriate positions they
have available. We do not in any way guarantee or take responsibility for
your ability to find a teaching position.
Can I do my Internship teaching in a state other than
MT, SD or WY?
The possibility does exist to intern in other states, but
is entirely dependant on that states policies and procedures regarding the
hiring of teachers who are en route to, but have not yet completed a
licensure program. Please inquire about the state(s) you are interested in.
Who pays me for the Internship teaching?
You are hired by the school district, given a contract,
and receive the same salary/benefits as would any other beginning teacher.
Do I have to send all of the application in at one
time?
No, we will start a file on you when we receive the first
piece of material. We will just add to the file until it is complete.
Do I need official transcripts from every
college/university I attended?
Yes. Transcripts also typically take the greatest amount
of time to receive (along with letters of recommendation), so we recommend
you contact the institutions you have attended and get this process rolling
as soon as possible.
What is an official transcript?
The transcript must be mailed directly to the NPTT office
from the issuing institution. It can not be issued to you or any other
person.
Do I have to move to Bozeman to take the classes?
No. All classes are online. This means you can live
anywhere and take the classes, as long as you have reliable internet
connectivity.
If I have already had education classes, will I still
have to take all of the classes?
Yes. Our program is designed such that the classes are
sequential and build on prior learning. In most cases our program will
likely be the quickest route to teacher licensure. However, if you have
completed a substantial amount of the courses in a licensure program at
another institution, continuing at that institution may be your best option.
If I am not a citizen, may I still enter the program?
Yes, but unless you are from a country where English is
the official language or have previously earned a degree at another U.S.
institution, you will have to take the TOEFL
exam if you are accepted into the program. You will also need to
complete a statement of financial sustainability.
