High Need LEAs

*Please note that this information pertains to individuals who applied to the NPTT program prior to the 2007-2008 academic year.  This scholarship and high needs placement program is no longer available to new, future applicants.

Overview

For the purposes of the Transition to Teaching grants from the U.S. Department of Education, high-need LEAs (Local Education Associations), or school districts, are those LEAs identified as having 20% or more of the student body below the poverty line and where 3.5% or more of the teachers are teaching out of area or on emergency, temporary or provisional licenses.

For the current year, the following LEAs in our Northern Plains region have been approved as "high-need" by the U.S. Department of Education:

Montana

South Dakota

Wyoming

Below are files listing LEAs in Montana, South Dakota, and Wyoming along with the percentage of students served in those LEAs below the poverty line. The lists are being provided to give applicants an idea of the communities/areas that we hope to be able to serve.

Teacher Placements

The link below shows NPTT teacher placements for the '03-'04 and '04-'05 school years.

* For Troops-to-Teachers in NPTT

If you are a prior service member registered with the Troops-to-Teachers program and receiving a stipend available from that program to pay for the NPTT program, the list of high-need LEAs differs some because of the legislative definition of high-need as it specifically pertains to the TTT program. For information about the TTT list of high-need LEAs (school districts) contact the regional Troops-to-Teachers office at (406)994-7586 or e-mail ttt@montana.edu.
