Praxis II
Effective September, 2006, the MSU Education Department requires
that teacher candidates pass the
appropriate
Praxis II content area tests
in all major and minor endorsement areas being sought before an Institutional
Evaluation & Recommendation
for licensure will be issued to any state licensing/certifying agency.
NPTT teacher candidates should plan ahead and
register for the appropriate Praxis II tests well enough in advance so as
not to hinder the
licensure/certification process. While the tests are only offered
seven times each year, there are
test sites all over the country that will be proctoring the tests.
Candidates do not have to be in Bozeman to take the test. Please note that you
must register for an exam almost a month before the test date (to avoid a late
registration fee) and the exam score will not be available for about six weeks
after the exam.
Low scores on these examinations will
affect your status in the program and your ability to receive
licensure/certification in the state you plan to teach in.
State Requirements
The State of Montana does
not currently have a testing requirement for licensure. However, since
successful completion of the Praxis II content areas tests is an MSU Department
of Education requirement for the Institutional Evaluation & Recommendation, the
lack of a state requirement is moot.
As of July 1, 2005, all candidates
for initial certification in South Dakota will be required to pass the
Praxis II content area tests for each endorsement they seek as well as the
Principals of Teaching and Learning test most appropriate to their level of
preparation. More detailed information on the
South Dakota
requirements can be found at their web site.
As of September, 2004 all
candidates for initial certification in Wyoming will be required to pass
the Praxis II Principals of Teaching and Learning test most appropriate to their
level of preparation. More detailed information on the
Wyoming
requirements can be found at their web site.
Content Tests
All students will take at least
one exam, while some students may have to take two or three exams if they have a
minor, minors, or additional majors. Broadfield Social Studies majors may need
to take additional exams in specific content areas for licensure in other
states.
The tests identified below are the
ones required for the MSU major and minor endorsement areas. The MSU passing
score is in parenthesis after the test number. Be aware that state passing
scores for
South Dakota and
other state departments of education may be higher.

Score Reporting
You will receive your score(s)
from ETS in the mail. When you receive your scores, please fax, e-mail, or mail
a copy of your scores to the NPTT office. Do not send the original
score report. Put the original in a safe place. You never know when someone
will ask you for an official copy of your scores. You have the only official
copy, so hang on to it.
