Because you have already obtained a bachelor’s degree, you will only need to meet the requirements of the nursing major (traditional or accelerated options) to complete your Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing (BSN). Your first degree satisfies CORE 2.0 for Montana State University (MSU). College Writing (W) and University Seminar (US) (College of Nursing requirements) are waived. If those courses were previously completed, the grades are not used in the placement GPA calculation for upper division placement in the traditional BSN option or for consideration into the accelerated BSN option. If interested in exploring the accelerated BSN option at MSU, please visit http://www.montana.edu/nursing/academic/acceleratedbsn.htm for complete details on specific criteria/requirements for application eligibility.
The College of Nursing has a process for evaluating transcripts for prospective post baccalaureate students interested in the traditional or accelerated BSN options. If you would like to receive the packet to start the evaluation process please complete the online request information form. Once you have received your packet, please complete the Temporary Worksheet to the best of your ability and return it with transcripts from each school attended (need not be official transcripts for this evaluation). Once your completed Temporary Worksheet and transcript/s have been received, within 4-6 weeks you will be contacted to discuss this evaluation with you.
MSU has a transfer equivalency website that shows how certain courses from selected colleges and universities will transfer to MSU. You can do your own research on how courses you have taken elsewhere will transfer to MSU.
Visit https://atlas.montana.edu:9000/pls/bzagent/hwzkxfer.p_selstate to explore the transfer equivalency information. Please note that not all schools are represented on this site and only courses that have been reviewed by the MSU Office of Admission’s evaluators have been entered.
For students interested in learning more about the accelerated BSN option, they may attend an information session held at the College of Nursing. These sessions are usually scheduled once a month between September and March. For additional information about these sessions or general questions regarding the accelerated BSN option, please contact Julie Ruff at julie.ruff@montana.edu
Applying to MSU
All new students to MSU are required to complete a formal application process through the Office of Admissions. Please visit http://www.montana.edu/admissions/apply.shtml#second for application requirements and instructions on how to apply as a second degree-seeking student. Students should also visit http://www.montana.edu/admissions/apply.shtml#transfer for new transfer student information and orientation details.
If a former MSU student, please visit http://www.montana.edu/admissions/apply.shtml#former for application instructions.
Please note that enrollment in the pre-nursing major is available for students admitted to MSU provided they have met the University admission requirements and, if transferring from another institution, have at least a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.
Advising Appointment
The College of Nursing holds formal Group Orientation sessions throughout the year (prior to fall and spring semesters) which it expects all new pre-nursing students to attend in order to be well informed about our programs. As part of the Orientation session, you will be advised and may register for your courses. For students who cannot attend a group session, they must attend University Orientation in order to register for courses.
Prospective second degree students who would like to speak with an advisor in advance for general questions pertaining to the traditional BSN option or register for an Orientation session prior to the start of classes may contact Melissa Gutzman at melissak@montana.edu or by phone at (406) 994-2660.
