PROPOSAL SUMMARY
The Associated Students of MSU (ASMSU) and the MSU Leadership Institute propose increasing their current leadership trainings and services to include a larger group of students and stakeholders, while at the same time providing and supporting consequential and meaningful opportunities to apply this knowledge and utilize leadership skills within the MSU community. The Leadership Institute will provide and expand existing programs for MSU students, faculty, and staff relevant to leadership and engagement, as well as create organizational frameworks to support the university in meeting its goals as set forth in the new 2012 MSU Strategic Plan.
STRATEGIC ALIGNMENT
The MSU Leadership Institute proposal and its elements align closely with the Engagement goal and the following objectives:
Objective E.1 Strategically increase service, outreach and engagement

The MSU Leadership Institute will fulfill Objective E.1 through intensive mentoring of student clubs and organizations. Through mentorship, new student organizations can be created and nourished into success. Trainings will leave these groups with tools in communication, management and recruitment. These skills allow for stronger and more effective campus organizations that provide for greater student engagement. Also, this objective aligns with the plan for individual/group student project support and coaching. By mentoring these groups and individuals, the MSU Leadership Institute will increase service, outreach, and engagement by enabling students and groups to create their own opportunities and follow through on their own ideas that in turn affect large portions of the MSU community.
Objective E.3 MSU students, faculty and staff will have increased opportunities of leadership development

The MSU Leadership Institute will support Objective E.3 through a series of Student Workshops on Leadership Strategies for Clubs and Organizations, an Annual Student Leadership Conference, buttressing of the existing Lecture Series, and intensive student club and organization leadership mentoring. The workshop and leadership conference will engage students in leadership practices and skill building and create networking and collaboration between various clubs and organizations. This will also be done on an individual scale with student clubs and organizations that specifically need leadership training. Intensive trainings, combined with other programing will provide an inclusive and global view of effective leadership. Additionally, the Lecture Series allows students to interact with world class leaders and scholars and exposes them to leadership, justice, and diversity issues which are concepts that MSU graduates will then be better equipped to confront upon graduation, making them more able to give back to the MSU and global community.

Goal: Members of the Montana State University community will be leaders, scholars and engaged citizens of their local, national and global communities, working together with community partners to exchange and apply knowledge and resources to improve the human prospect.

PROPOSAL SCOPE
Describe the Proposal

I. Student Workshop on Leadership Strategies for Clubs and Organizations & Annual Student Leadership Conference

The MSU Leadership Institute requests strategic investment for 1) an annual student workshop focused on leadership strategies for clubs and organizations and 2) an annual leadership conference open to workshop participants and the general student body. The MSU Leadership Institute will engage students in best leadership practices and skill building with a two-part training that involves a workshop prior to the academic year’s fall semester and a leadership conference at the beginning of the spring semester.  Networking and collaboration with clubs will be another key component of both the workshop and conference. Both programs will underscore the importance of building relationships and the process of collaboration (and across disciplines) as a key to developing one’s leadership capacity. II. Institutional Support of Leadership Lecture Series

The MSU Leadership Institute has a proven track record in providing students, staff, faculty and public with the highest caliber lectures by top-tier leaders in their fields such as Maya Angelou, Tom Brokaw, Salman Rushdie, Shirin Ebadi and notable others. Honorariums for speakers and scholars continue to increase and the MSU Leadership Institute asks for institutional financial support to match 50% of the annual student support to assure continuance in bringing the highest quality leaders, lectures and master classes to campus.  Outcomes include the interaction of students with world class leaders and scholars, the modeling of ethics in decision-making, congruence between stated values and actions, sharing inspirational life stories of the challenges and rewards of leading, and fostering an inclusive campus environment which affirms the value of every community member by exposing students to leadership, social justice and diversity issues. III. Leadership Intensive Mentoring of Student Clubs and Organizations

The MSU Leadership Institute will train student leaders to enable highly successful practices to support organizational success over an intensive one to two year mentoring contract. This one-on-one contracted model will provide student leaders and organizations with transferable tools and skills so that they may successfully recruit, lead and positively transform the campus community. Intensive training provides knowledge and practice in communication, leading meetings, recruitment, retention, organizational management, fundraising, and transition of leadership. The MSU Leadership Institute will aid student organizations in accomplishing their goals that involve service, outreach, and engagement within the community and beyond.   Objectives L.1, I.1, I.2, E.1, E.3, L.2, A.2

IV. Individual/Group Student Project Support and Mentoring

The MSU Leadership Institute will announce the awarding of a fellowship which provides additional support and coaching opportunities to individual students (or small groups) that have a dream of giving back to their community, whether it is at the local or global arena. An outcome will be cultivating and administering community-based and service learning and engagement experiences in the broader community and region.

This program can be exemplified by "Frugal Fashionista" which had its origins in the Institute’s 2012 screening of the film Beyond Belief, a film about 9/11 and two women who lost their husbands that day and created the Beyond the 11th nonprofit to support the widows in Afghanistan.  A student who attended the film was inspired by the idea and she wanted to throw a fundraiser. Her idea for the fundraiser was a used clothing silent auction and party, but she had no knowledge of how to host or plan a fundraising event, recruit student volunteers, and program management.  The MSU Leadership Institute provided start-up financial support as well as a specific training program – and in the end, the student sent over $3000 to Beyond the 11th and also provided gently used new outfits to over four hundred women on the MSU campus. Describe the broader impacts and benefits of this proposal

I.  Student Workshop on Leadership Strategies for Clubs and Organizations & Annual Student Leadership Conference

A student leadership workshop* at the beginning of the academic year provides student leaders of clubs and organizations with the opportunity to develop their leadership skills throughout the semester. The workshop itself teaches essential, multidisciplinary skills such as leadership, networking and communication through hands-on activities. These are key facets necessary for success in any career field, and mastering these skills would create competent graduates ready to give back to the MSU community and beyond. This workshop offers students a chance to plan out their club or organization’s year and enter the next semester ready to engage with incoming and returning students immediately – offering a plethora of options for effective engagement. The workshop spans 6-7 hours and provides meals, trainers, staff and essential materials necessary for effective training. Expected maximum influence from the workshop is 60 individual unique students representing a maximum of 30 unique campus student organizations which can indirectly influence over 300 individual students through interaction within clubs with an average minimum size of 10 members as outlined by Registered Student Organization guidelines.   Objectives I.2, A.2, L.1, E.3

The following Spring Semester is focused on a Leadership Conference to provide extended leadership engagement opportunities through an amplification of the fall workshop. Additional club and organization members are invited into the conference, broadening the networking opportunities and solidifying their connection to each other and MSU. The conference involves students in a deeper understanding of their university and to student organizations, such as ASMSU and its affiliates, which are involved in the decisions that affect much of student life at MSU. This creates better educated students that are equipped to vote, join Senate, advocate for positive change, and lead and support their MSU extracurricular connections.  Expected maximum influence of the conference is 120 individual students representing a minimum of the 30 clubs present at the workshop and possibly an additional 30 clubs. Total reach of the conference can be estimated to be a minimum of 1,200 individual unique students given a minimum social group of 10.  Objectives I.1, E.3

In addition, leaders of clubs and organizations will share strategies for effectively promoting and recruiting new and unique members – and the importance of diversity within their organizations. These skills are easily translated into any field, since self-marketing and marketing in general are essential skills in progression through a career – and understanding the value of a variety of voices and perspectives are key to successful leadership. Overall direct maximum reach of the program would be 150 individual students, indirect maximum reach is expected to be approximately 1,500 individual students.  Objectives E.1, A.2, I.2, L.2

*This workshop could also be transformed into a 1-credit course requiring 15 hours of training (and adding assessments) and by creating a two-day workshop.  It would offer students an extra option to fulfill the Freshman 15 objective and increase the 4-year graduation rate as proposed by the Provost’s Graduation Success Team. However, due to current restrictions to this MSU Strategic Investment Proposal, the faculty line option necessary to realize the course opportunity is not available.

II.  Institutional Support of Leadership Lecture Series

A leadership lecture series with world-class scholars and leaders strengthens the leadership opportunities for campus and community.  By bringing extraordinary individuals to campus, it differentiates MSU from other similar institutions, thereby supporting increased recruitment and retention of students, affinity from alumni and community, and added value to staff and faculty. With faculty, many lectures are included in course syllabi and become part of the curriculum at MSU.

The MSU Leadership Institute has also been an outstanding community partner for 15 years and the lecture series is an incredible opportunity for students, staff, faculty and community to interact with some of the world’s brightest minds.

Speaker events include a public lecture, but also may include master classes and other venues of interactive student contact and community engagement.

The maximum expected direct influence of a Lecture Series Speaker Master's Class is 180 individual students. The maximum direct influence of extra programming (dinner, receptions, etc.) for distinguished speakers can range from 10 to 80 individual students. The maximum direct influence of the speaker's lecture can range from 140 individual students to upwards of 2,000 individual students, the net population of attendees is generally 1/3 public which is composed of a majority of MSU affiliated individuals such as faculty and staff.  Total direct contact from a lecture may exceed 8,000 individuals depending on the interest in the speaker (i.e. Condoleezza Rice, Maya Angelou, etc.). Total indirect contact may exceed 100,000 individuals given a minimum social group of 10 unique persons for every individual attendee, with many more with media and live feed coverage. III.  Leadership Intensive Mentoring of Student Clubs and Organizations

MSU is nationally recognized for its student chapter of Engineers Without Borders (EWB). EWB has enabled students across a broad array of disciplines to apply what they learn in the classroom to real-world problems and to develop solutions that greatly affect people in need. The MSU Leadership Institute provided intensive mentoring of this club at its beginning, including providing three student EWB presidents with MSU Leadership Institute student associate positions concurrent with EWB’s growth and organizational challenges.  The MSU Leadership Institute will duplicate this model, by providing up to four clubs per academic year with leadership mentoring. The maximum expected direct influence of the mentorship program is 6 individual unique clubs each comprising a minimum of 10 members as outlined in the Registered Student Organizations guidelines, with expected recruitment gains final individual club impact can be estimated at a minimum of 30 members per group (as some will recruit many more than others), thus total impact is expected at a maximum of 180 unique individuals. IV. Individual/Group Student Project Support and Mentoring

This program links directly to the Strategic Plan’s Engagement Goal – “Members of the MSU community will be leaders, scholars and engaged citizens of their local, national and global communities, working together with community partners to exchange and apply knowledge and resources to improve the human prospect.”

Students will be able to learn how to be a leader while giving back to their community. Students will shadow MSU Leadership Institute staff and be assigned a specific staff mentor who will in turn provide vital information and support on a 1:1 basis with the scholarship winner. Together, the scholarship winner and the staff member will set goals and outline the course of the project in detail and follow through on their goals. The end result of which will be a successful project completion or launch depending on the style of the expected outcome. Total maximal expected direct influence of project support and mentoring scholarship will be 4 students. Maximum indirect influence of this scholarship is expected to be over 400 individual persons within the MSU and Bozeman community (assuming average impact of 100 persons per project).  Objectives E.1, L.1, I.1

 
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Implementation Plan

I.  Student Workshop on Leadership Strategies for Clubs and Organizations & Annual Student Leadership Conference

Planning for the first workshop begins Spring 2013, with the first workshop planned for Fall 2013. Feedback will be collected following the first workshop and integrated into the planning of the spring conference. Planning of the spring conference will begin in Fall 2013 and will be completed by mid-February 2014, with feedback to be gathered following the conference. This feedback will be used to improve the next conference (Spring 2015) and the next workshop (Fall 2014). This same model of planning, implementation, feedback, and improvement will serve the following years of the workshop-conference series.

II. Institutional Support of Lecture Series

Begins Fall 2013 to be utilized during the academic year and the Year of Engaged Leadership. Planning will be done the semester and months prior to the various lectures with feedback being collected following each lecture. Implementation of lectures will follow the regular MSU Leadership Institute model of lecture, master’s classes, and various other opportunities.

III. Intensive Leadership Mentoring for Student Clubs and Organizations

Begins Fall 2013 for academic year. Will follow a strict tick-tock implementation strategy where two clubs per academic year receive intensive leadership training and mentorship (tick) followed by a year of less intense and more self-driven training and mentorship (tock). During the tock cycle with the pair of second year groups, a new tick cycle will be begun with two new groups, thus ensuring the constant mentorship of groups into the future.

IV. Individual/Group Student Project Support and Coaching

Call for proposals begins Fall 2013; Announcement of support and coaching scholarships will be accomplished by December 2013. Support and coaching begins Spring 2014 with the launching of the project by May 2014 with implementation of the project beginning in September 2014. This timeline will be used for years two and three as well.

 
Assessment Plan

I.  Student Workshop on Leadership Strategies for Clubs and Organizations and Annual Student Leadership Conference

Surveys of students pre-workshop/conference and post-workshop/conference to determine improvement of student learning and skill building

Evaluations of workshops and conferences to determine quality of targeted training

Follow-up survey of attendees to determine summative increases/decreases of membership and retention in student club/organization, role of the trained leader in supporting positive progress and improvement of club/organization functions, and additional needs and training requests.

II. Institutional Support of Lecture Series

Attendance at lectures and master classes; press coverage of lectures; direct student and campus community feedback; numbers of students involved in planning, volunteering and executing the event will all be used as assessment of success.

III. Intensive Leadership Mentoring for Student Clubs and Organizations

Follow-up survey of attendees to determine summative increases/decreases of membership and retention in student clubs and reflection on lessons learned. Both the MSU Leadership Institute staff and the club/organization co-create the objectives for the mentoring. Clubs/organizations are required to prepare a report as part of their contract with the MSU Leadership Institute.

IV. Individual/Group Student Project Support and Coaching

Set goals and metrics with the student/group in the initial coaching stages and evaluate these goals at the end of the project.

Follow up with student/group for ongoing support from the MSU Leadership Institute if applicable

The first year assessments will be reviewed and adjusted as needed. Ongoing checks and balances to assure goals and objectives are met will occur throughout the year, with special emphasis on the first year’s focus to create a successful model. 

If by year three, and if objectives are not met, the programs will be eliminated.
