Consulting is any additional activity beyond duties assigned by the institution, professional in nature and based in the appropriate discipline, for which the individual receives additional personal remuneration during the contract year. Remuneration for consulting is paid by agencies or individuals outside the University and the funds upon which consulting payments are drawn are not controlled by the University. All MSU employees should provide their clients with the “Notice to Private Clients” below.  Although consulting activities should be approved by the academic department head and fall under the Office of the Provost, the ORC handles any related potential or actual conflicts of interest. Faculty consulting is governed by BOR Policy 401.1 and the MSU Interim Faculty Handbook. Professional and Classified employees are governed by the Personnel Policy and Procedures Manual - 970.00 Outside Consulting. All consulting activities are subject to conflict of interest policies, and employees are required to report annually in the fall.
