Wes Henthorne has been involved in agriculture all his life, and has been involved in precision agriculture for five years. He raises beef cattle, alfalfa, small grains and peas, using conventional till and center pivot irrigation, and is on certified organic land. He has mapped field boundaries and weed locations with a variety of gps receivers and handheld CE computers, utilizing Site Mate, Arcview and Imagine software. As a result, he now has excellent maps for a multitude of uses, and can measure any acreages of interest quickly and accurately.
In the future, Wes will be using the Trimble GeoExplorer CE for enhanced accuracy of base maps. He knows firsthand the challenges of learning the precision agriculture technologies: "Be prepared to be overwhelmed. As you learn the terminology, you can begin to sort out what specific technologies will benefit you." Wes considers himself a resource to others who have questions about mapping in precision agriculture. "This is a super group of forward-looking people who are working to learn and apply new technology. If you're looking for typical ag coffee shop whining about things beyond our control, you have to look somewhere else!"
