Dear MSU Parents!
Greetings from the MSU Dean of Students office. We hope that you’ve had a great fall semester. It’s been COLD in Bozeman in December and the snow really still hasn’t started to fall at this point. This is bad news for our students who ski, but should be good news for their preparation for the upcoming week of final exams.
We trust that your student has enjoyed a wide variety of successes at MSU this semester. Our goal on campus is to help develop students holistically. For us, this means paying special attention to students’ growth intellectually, physically, emotionally and interpersonally as they enter adulthood. We strive to have our students learning and developing both inside and outside the classroom.

Winter Break FAQs
FINAL GRADES & ACADEMIC STANDING
When Are Grades Submitted By Instructors?
The Registrar's Office asks that all grades be submitted by Monday, December 19th. If your student sees an "NR" on their unofficial transcript, that grade has not yet been turned in, but should be in a matter of days.
How Can I Access My Student's Grades?
We recommend asking your student to check their "MyInfo" account, through the MSU Website. Students have their own secure log in, so have a conversation with your student about what access, if any, you will have to those grades. If you student provides you this access, you will be able to access grades, unofficial transcripts, bills, and more.
How Does Academic Standing Work?
As long as a student's overall and semester GPA are above a 2.0 (C Average), they will be in good standing. If a student's GPA falls below that level, they will be on some form of academic probation. University Probation is a 0.00 - 0.99 and College Probation is 1.00 - 1.99. Each case is a little different, but one or more semesters of academic probation may lead to academic suspension. Please see our Suspension Policy Flowchart for more clarification. We are also happy to answer any questions about this policy.
What Grades Are Required For The Dean's and the President's Lists?
A student needs to be full time (attempting 12 or more credits) an must earn a 3.5 for the Dean's List and earn a 4.0 for the President's List.
CLOSING OUT THE SEMESTER AND WINTER BREAK TRAVEL
When Is Book Buyback?
Book buyback at the MSU Bookstore starts this Friday, December 9th and extends through Friday, December 16th. They will be closed Sunday.
There's A Hold On My Student's Account - How Do I Remove It?
You student should know why the hold is on his or her account. If the student does not recall this information, they may call us. We would be happy to help your student connect with the people who are in charge of the hold. We will not be able to provide parents or family members with this information.
When Should Students Be Out Of The Residence Halls?
The Residence Halls close at noon on Saturday, December 17th. However, if your student finishes with his or her finals early, we ask that these students be respectful of the other students who are still taking exams during their remaining time in the halls.
How Can Students Arrange Rides Home?
If you student plans on driving home and has not yet made arrangements, we recommend a few options. Connecting with friends, roommates, or floormates can be a great way to go. There is also a board for carpooling and gas-sharing options in the basement of the Strand Union Building next to the MSU Bookstore. Some parents have asked about Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace. While we have not heard of issues with these services for this purpose in the past at MSU, we do ask you and your student to proceed with caution.
How Can Students Arrange Rides To The Airport?
Unfortunately we do not have a shuttle to the airport at this time. We encourage students to connect with friends to see if they can arrange a ride. If this is not a possibility, there is one taxi company in the area called All Valley Cab (406-388-9999). We encourage you to call ahead to schedule a pickup.

When Do Classes Start Next Semester?
Courses start Wednesday, January 11th at 8 AM.
When Do The Residence Halls Open?
The Residence Halls will reopen on Sunday, January 8th at Noon.
When Are Textbooks Available From The MSU Bookstore?
Some textbooks are already available in the MSU Bookstore. Books will continue to come in through the first several weeks of classes. As soon as a student has registered for classes, he or she can go to the bookstore and purchase books. If you would like to price out your student's books for next semester, you can look up their course materials online here.
Can My Student Change Majors Before Next Semester?
Students are welcome to change majors before next semester. If he or she knows which major they would like to pursue, they will need to take a form around to both his old and new department called a Change of Curriculum card. This form is then turned back to the Registrar's Office in Montana Hall.
Can My Student Add a Course Before Next Semester?
Students are welcome to add and drop courses before next semester. Courses can be added up until the 10th day. In the first five class days, a student may add a course online if there is still room. Between the 5th and 10th class day, your student will need to fill out an Add/Drop Form.
Can My Student Drop A Course Before Next Semester?
Students are welcome to add and drop courses before next semester. Courses may be dropped in the first 15 course days without any academic or financial penalty. During the first 10 course days, a student may drop a course online. Between the 10th and 15th class day, you student will need to fill out an

A Section My Student Needs Is Closed. Who Does My Student Talk To?
Unfortunately, sections of courses close up. We encourage students to continue to check throughout the break to see if any seats open up. Students are also welcome to contact the listed instructor or department directly to see if there is a waiting list or if any future sections will be added.
