A recent study by Schiffrin et all has concluded that so called "helicopter parenting," defined as the over protective parenting of student away from home, particularly in college, has proven detrimental to the mental health and well being of young adults.

Free Webinar: Monday, March, 25th - 6:30 PM Mountain Time
We would like to invite you to our March Good Neighbor Webinar! The purpose of this webinar is to inform the parents and families of MSU students what it means to be a “good neighbor” in the Bozeman community, especially those students choosing to live off campus. We will have stakeholders from the community represented in this panel discussion.
We will be talking with experts from the following areas:
-Bozeman's Neighborhoods Program
-Bozeman Police Department
-Bozeman City Planning Department
-MSU Residence Life
-Local Property Management
-Downtown Bozeman Association
-ASMSU Legal Services
Topics will range from resources available for students looking to live on or off campus, legal rights and responsibilities of renting or owning, fun area events, what safety features to look for in a rental property, and what is expected of tenants.
We have 97 live spots for this session. This webinar will be recorded and made available to all parents and families on our listserv within approximately a week of the webinar's live date. If you are not able to be present for this live event, we ask you to forego registration at this time.

Alumni Legacy Scholarships Available
Parents, did you graduate from Montana State University? Are you a member of the MSU Alumni Association? Encourage your student to apply for an Alumni Legacy Scholarship!
$500 will be awarded to up to 10 students in recognition of excellence in organizational leadership and academic achievement while attending Montana State University. Applications are available here and must be submitted by April 1, 2013.

Summer 2013 & Fall 2013 Advising Begins March 18th
Following Spring Break (March 11-15), it will again be time for students to meet with their academic advisors to plan out their summer and fall schedules! Students should be working with their department to meet with someone face-to-face to discuss their options, future classes, and available resources.
If you student is not sure who to start visiting with in their department, please refer to this handy guide of Campus Advising Contacts.
Coming this Spring, your student will have access to an online advising program called Degree Works. This exciting program allows your student to see which classes they still need for their major, calculate their GPA, and even see "What If" they changes their major, or added a major or minor. For more information on Degree Works, check out the article in this week's Exponent!
Registration for both Summer and Fall will occur concurrently beginning in April.
Day of Student Recognition Applications Due
Is your student involved on or off campus?
Encourage your outstanding MSU Student to flaunt their leadership skills and/or service to their community by submitting an application. Winners will receive awards and scholarships during our 90th Annual Day of Student Recognition on April 9, 2013!

Career Services Spring Break Externships
Career, Internship, and Student Employment Services will be taking a group of students on two Spring Break Externships -- one to Salt Lake City, UT, and one around the state of Montana. Click here for more information on this unique opportunity!
Participants from all majors and class standings are invited to participate. The goal of the tour (in addition to having fun) is to present career and networking to possibilities to you to broaden your perspective of the "world of work" and to build invaluable connections to explore internship and career possibilities.
Student Body Elections March 5th & 6th
Elections for student body President and Vice-President are from 7 AM March 5th until 7 PM March 6th. Encourage your students to be informed about the candidates and vote here on March 5th and 6th.
