Dear Mr. Raines,

I write because of comments made in a recent New York Times article, "Off-Field Hurdles Stymie Indian Athletes" (6/17/01) that included quotes from the men's basketball coach at Montana State University, where I serve as president.

I would like to make it clear that the comments do not reflect the attitudes nor the perceptions of myself or the administration at Montana State University, nor does it mirror the experience of American Indian students on this campus. For several decades, Montana State University has worked diligently to provide a supportive environment for American Indian students. With about 60,000 American Indians living in Montana, or six percent of the state's population, it is the largest minority in both our institution and in our state. Part of our university's mission is to serve the American Indians of our state.

Our successes are many. One of the most respected members of our faculty is a respected American Indian scholar and the endowed chair in our very healthy Native American Studies department. One of the most honored students in our recent graduating class was an American Indian woman who is on her way to medical school. American Indian athletes have been successful participants in our track, football, and basketball programs for many years. In fact, one of the most successful members of our current basketball team is American Indian.

This issue, and its ramifications, is particularly important to me, for the study of Native American linguistics is my area of research and, for many years, the impetus of my career. One of my highest priorities, expressed even while interviewing for the presidency of Montana State University, is to strengthen MSU's relationships with the Native American community. Many people at this university are working to make this happen.

I assure all members of the nation's American Indian community that Montana State provides an environment that nurtures and supports the goals of American Indian students, and will continue to do so in the future.
