MSU Dean of the College of Letters & Science

Appointment:

Nicol Rae named new dean of MSU College of Letters and Science

Documents:

July Update:

  • As summer has progressed, the search consulting firm, Greenwood/Asher & Associates, has continued to reach out to prospective applicants and individuals nominated for the position. These individuals have and are exploring the opportunity presented by MSU and the College of Letters and Science and evaluating whether their qualities, experiences, characteristics and future aspirations match with our opportunity.
  • The position has been advertised in a variety of different venues, both electronically and in print. (You can see the list of venues handled by Greenwood/Asher & Associates in the June update. The search committee and other colleagues have also posted the position on professional listservs and job websites.) Additionally, the supplemental material prepared by the College has been provided to selected applicants by the consulting firm.
  • The screening date for the position is August 1. The search committee will be extremely busy reviewing complete applications in the next three weeks and creating an initial pool of candidates. This initial pool will be invited to meet with the search committee and the Provost at a hotel interview. Reference checks will also be conducted. These two activities will help the search committee narrow the initial pool to a finalist pool.
  • The finalists will be invited to interview on campus. Four dates have been scheduled for finalists interviews: August 30-31, September 5-6, September 10-11, and September 17-18. The campus interview schedule will be distributed soon so people involved in the interviews can get the dates and times on their schedules.
  • The Provost hopes to make an offer and begin negotiating terms of the job with the next Dean of Letters and Science by the end of September.

June Update:

  • The search for a new Dean for the MSU College of Letters and Science is on track and progressing well. The search committee has been working hard and done a very good job with the various components that are required for an upper level administrative position search. Thank you, all.
  • The consulting firm, Greenwood/Asher & Associates, has been contacting individuals who have been nominated, have expressed interest or may be interested in the position.
  • Ads have been placed in Women in Higher Education; Chronicle of Higher Education, Journal of Blacks in Higher Education, Council of Colleges of Arts and Sciences and will be placed Diverse, Hispanic Outlook, and Inside Higher Education in the near future.
  • High quality marketing packets with information on each department, center and institute in the College have been developed and provided to the search consultant for use with interested candidates. (Thanks to those involved in this project. Well done!)
  • Campus interviews will likely occur in late August and early September. Interview schedules are being drafted and will be sent out when finalized so those involved in the interview process can reserve times on their schedules.
