I spent the afternoon folding cranes
In squares of glassine I stole from the
Bakery on the corner, and thinking about
The last time we spoke.

Sitting, running a ragged thumbnail along the
Diagonal, striking a solid crease from one papery
Corner to the next, building the wings and
Throat, the bones and the blood

A roll of quarters
Heavy in the pocket
Like drugs,
Like last week's sweat
In a bag over the shoulder.
Looking for this week's promise
In a box of Good times Detergent
And a fistful of Don't-fuckin'-count-on-it Dryer Sheets.

Certain things carry over
From the work week.
More jean rips, and
Crusted mud flannel shirts.
Emptying pockets of nails
And NoDoz packets,
Gas station receipts and
Stains that won't come out.
