Unlike other P2P filesharing programs, once you start downloading a file through BitTorrent, your computer must upload the downloaded parts to other users in order to complete the file. During the download, your computer will appear on the BitTorrent server list, and may use a large amount of network bandwidth in the downloading and uploading process, interfering with other users' ability to connect our network or to the Internet for academic and administrative purposes.

Since BitTorrent does not offer the option to disable uploading, ResNet recommends that students uninstall BitTorrent due to the potential misuse of institutional computing resources and the danger of copyright infringement. See below for instructions for uninstalling BitTorrent.

NOTE: Even though there is an implementation of BitTorrent that has a built-in function that allows the user to set the upload speed to zero, however, the disclaimer for this version states that uploading is still occuring, albeit at a much slower speed, and your computer will still appear in the server list for the file you are downloading.

Uninstalling BitTorrent

  1. Double-click on the My Computer icon on your desktop.
Note: If you are running Windows XP and the My Computer icon does not appear on your desktop, choose My Computer from the Start menu.
  2. Double-click on Control Panel.
  3. Double-click on Add/Remove Programs.
  4. Select the program on the list named BitTorrent. Click on the Add/Remove or Remove button. Click Close or Finished after the uninstall is complete.
  5. Close all open windows.
If the Add/Remove Programs window does not list BitTorrent, follow the steps below:
  1. Double-click on the My Computer icon on your desktop.
Note: If you are running Windows XP and the My Computer icon does not appear on your desktop, choose My Computer from the Start menu.
  2. Double-click on the icon for your hard drive.
  3. Open the Program Files folder.
  4. Right-click on the BitTorrent folder. From the menu which appears, choose Delete.
  5. When you are asked if you are sure you want to remove the folder, click Yes.
