P2P Guide: Bittorrent
Unlike other P2P filesharing programs, once you start downloading a file through BitTorrent,
your computer must upload the downloaded parts to other users in order to complete the file.
During the download, your computer will appear on the BitTorrent server list, and may use a large
amount of network bandwidth in the downloading and uploading process, interfering with other
users' ability to connect our network or to the Internet for academic and administrative purposes.
Since BitTorrent does not offer the option to disable uploading, ResNet recommends that students uninstall BitTorrent due to the potential misuse of institutional computing resources and the danger of copyright infringement. See below for instructions for uninstalling BitTorrent.
NOTE: Even though there is an implementation of BitTorrent that has a built-in
function that allows the user to set the upload speed to zero, however, the disclaimer for this
version states that uploading is still occuring, albeit at a much slower speed, and your computer
will still appear in the server list for the file you are downloading.
