Setup Guide: Disabling File Shares in Windows
For the last couple of years, ResNet staff have been flooded with calls from ResNet
users plagued by several viruses that take advantage of open network shares.
Open network shares are often part of the standard Windows XP configuration and may have
been set at the factory. Most
users have no idea that their computer is unprotected from these malicious viruses due
to factory settings on their computers. To this end, we have changed the
Acceptable Use Policy to reflect this concern and included
these instructions on how to turn off open shares.
1. Click on the "Start" button, and then on "Run" (see image below).
2. Type "net user guest password" (replace the word "password" with the password you want to use) and click on the "OK" button (see image below).
3. All set!
