Setup Guide: Windows 2000 and XP
1. From the Start button, select "Settings" and then the "Network and Dialup Connections" folder.
2. Right-click your mouse on the icon called "Local Area Connection"
3. Next, select "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" and click on the "Properties" button
4. Make sure that "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address automatically" are the options selected (as shown). These are the default settings for the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) when an ethernet card is installed.
5. Click on the "Advanced..." button
6. Click on the tab at the top of the window labeled "DNS."
7. Make sure that the box (toward the bottom of the window) marked "Register this connection's addresses in DNS" is UNCHECKED.
8. Click on "OK" until you close the LAN properties window.
Adding your Windows XP or 2000 computer to the ResNet workgroup:
1. Right click on the "My Computer" icon located either on your desktop or in your Start menu and select "Properties" from the pop-up menu.
2. Click the tab labeled "Network Identification" and then click on the button labeled "Properties."
3. Enter an appropriate name under "Computer Name." Please refrain from using profane or other offensive words or titles as your computer name. ResNet is a family network and children have access via their parents' computers in Family and Graduate housing. Please be responsible.
4. Select "Workgroup," enter "ResNet" and click OK. Making your computer part of the ResNet workgroup will allow other ResNet users to see your computer.
