National History

The Montana Beta Chapter was founded at Montana State University on April 22nd, 1961. Starting in the sixties, the chapter was housed in Quad C, and started the red door tradition for MT Beta. The brothers enjoyed participating in intramurals, Greek life, and campus leadership positions. The other quads were occupied by sororities, and the brothers played football and frisbee on the front lawn.
The chapter continued living in Quad C throughout the seventies. At the time, there were eleven fraternities and seven other sororities on campus, with five others living in the other quads. Brothers often were seen participating in activities with Girls of the Golden Heart, consisting of girls mostly from other sororities. Highlights from the times included a giant sling shot, the Greek winter formal, Norris hot springs, and fishing around Cameron bridge.
Around 1994, our chapter was started up again as an SEC (Sigma Epsilon Chapter). With an incoming group of forty six brothers, and a strong AVC, the spring was a promising time for the chapter. The following fall however, only twenty of the original brothers returned to the chapter, with no returning officers. Over the next three years SigEp garnered the number one GPA for five of six semesters, three top intramural finishes, and leadership positions in both IFC and the campus. After a large graduating class in May of 1997, the chapter was closed.
During the year 2002, an SEC was started in October on the MSU campus again. Using the Balanced Man Scholarship as a recruitment tool, SigEp worked tirelessly to recruit numerous freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors.  With the influx of new members the chapter was revitalized and able to complete the long awaited chartering application which was sent to Richmond, VA for ratification.
In 2010 The Montana State University Chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon got approval for Full Charter by the National Headquarters.  With the encouragement of the charter pushing the members to succeed, the members of Montana Beta were able to clean up at the Spring 2011 Carlson Leadership Academy.  The highlights of the five awards won was the Residential Learning Community designation.  The RLC designation was a record for time between chartering and designation as an RLC for SigEp nationally and serves as an important milestone for Montana Beta.
In 2011 The Montana Beta Chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon received its RLC designation by National Headquarters.
