MSU campus

A map of the campus is here.  Please review it so you can orient yourself to Hapner Hall, Miller Dining Pavillion, Bison Parking Lots, and 'Norm' Hall.

Residence Hall Accommodations

All RET participants who requested on-campus housing will be in Hapner Hall.

Hapner Hall is located on West Cleveland Street between 7th and 8th Avenues. Google Maps will take you there.

Rooms have a fan, pillows, linens, and bath towels.  A bathrobe and slippers are recommended for the dorm-style showers.  Communal refrigerators are available in the common area.  A dorm fridge is available in your room for medical purposes only and can be requested at check-in.  Other frequently asked questions are answered here.

Lounges, vending machines and laundry facilities are located throughout each building. Laundry cards can be purchased at the front desk. Front desks are staffed 24 hours a day. Attendees requesting assistance or special services may contact the desk at any time.

Hapner Hall has

  • Weight room recently updated with new equipment
  • Kitchen
  • TV lounge
  • Laundry room
  • Music practice room with piano
  • Piano in lobby
  • Sinks in rooms
  • Free cable TV in the public areas of the Residence Hall
  • Direct and wireless internet access

For more information, including the Tobacco and Alcohol polices for Montana State University, please see our University Policies and Summer Housing Guidelines.

Check-in/Check-out

Check-in time is anytime after 1:00 pm on Sunday, June 25. Participiants can check themselves in at the front desk of Hapner Hall when they arrive on campus. Check-out time is anytime before 11:00 am on the date of departure. Guests must check out with the clerk at the front desk in order to assess charges accrued during the stay and return the room keys.

Need to include how late they can check in on Sunday, June 25

Also: Is Miller Dining Hall open on Sunday night? Last year, we wrote this:

For those checking in tonight - Rendezvous Dining Hall is open 7-7 - if your dine there for dinner tonight or breakfast tomorrow, please keep your receipts - subsequently, there will be a list at the Rendezvous cashier and you will simply need to tell them your RET affiliation.

Residence Hall curfew times

The Residence Hall main doors are locked in the nighttime and may require an MSU Cat Card to enter (last year they locked at 10pm but it may be different this year). We will get Cat Cards for everyone, but it may not be for a few days. If you plan to be out of the residence hall after 10pm (or perhaps even earlier), we recommend checking in with the front desk for the most current information to make sure you are not locked out.

Parking for Commuters and On-Campus Residents

Vehicle information for all participants has been provided to parking services and you have a virtual pass to park in any MSU Bison Lot. There are several on campus. If you park in other lots, you will receive a parking ticket.

MSU Parking Map - Bison lots are numbered 1, 2, 8, 9, 22, 26, 27 and 28.

The nearest ones to Hapner Hall are Bison Lot 9, just west of 8th Avenue and north of Jabs Hall (the new business building), and Bison Lot 22, which surrounds the residence hall called "The Quads" off of West Cleveland (this lot is east of Hapner Hall).

For commuters, Bison Lot 2 is slightly closer to Norm Asbjornson Hall and is located off West Lincoln, near the Roskie Residence Halls. You may also park in Bison Lots 9, 22 or any other.

Note that there is extensive construction on campus this summer, which may make some lots easier to access than others.

Packing List - Residents and commuters

Bedding and towels are provided in the residence halls.

You may wish to bring a fan.

All participants should bring a laptop or tablet if possible.

If you have an MSU Cat Card, please bring it with you.

Clothing is casual (jeans/shorts and t-shirts are fine), and we will be doing a lot of walking, so please wear comfortable shoes. When you receive your lab assignments, you may be required to wear closed-toed shoes and long pants, so please have these items available. Bring a jacket for chilly evenings and field trips.

First Day of Class and First Two Weeks of Class

We will meet Monday, June 26 in Norm Asbjornson Hall Room 329 at 9 a.m. This is the new engineering hall and is also called "Norm Hall" or NAH. We will have coffee and Costco breakfast items. This room will be our "home base" throughout the summer.

Week one (June 26-30) will include introductions, orientations, trainings and placements with Research Mentors. On Day One, you will learn about how you will receive your stipends and travel reimbursements.

Week two (July 3-7) is REMOTE and will include online trainings/activities. You may choose to remain on campus this week or return to yourt home community.

Meals

Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are provided, including weekends, for our participants housed in the dorms.  Lunch is provided for our participants who are daily commuters. All meals for both on-campus residents and commuters will be in Miller Dining Hall, which is located within the Roskie/Hedges residence hall complex.

MSU Alerts

Three notification processes are used to warn the campus community in the event of an emergency or public safety risk; Emergency Notifications, Timely Warnings, and Public Safety Advisory. It is important for everyone to become familiar with each procedure and understand when they are used. The local community, family, and friends are encouraged to opt in to the university Emergency Notification system by texting "montanastate" to 888-777. Opt-in steps can be found here.

MSU Police also offers a free app, Safe Cats, which visitors can use to keep themselves informed while on campus. Safe Cats is available for free in the Apple App Store or Google Play Store. The app features multiple services which can be assessed with a click and the services can differ time to time based on the demand and more information can be found online at: http://www.montana.edu/police/safe_cats.html.

Please feel free to contact our office at the telephone numbers listed below or [email protected] with any questions.
