Where are the current rennovation plans??? The SUB rennovations so far do not correlate to the floor plans that are posted on this website.
Why is the rec center getting shafted by food service on this project? Not only is the rec center losing most of its games, but it is also losing valuable space for parties and what not. I don't know who drew up the design plans, but obviously they have never came into the rec center when it is at full capacity to see how much room it needs. I am all for change and updating things, but when something as heavily used as the rec center loses all of its seating area only to gain a tiny part back by the addition of 106e, I see that as a problem. I will be voting against this until something is changed to balance out things on the first floor.
A little over 110 dollars per year to make MSU a better place? Of course I will. I am a loyal Bobcat, and will be making donations until the day I die. So when MSU asked me to pay a measly 15 dollars a month while I'm in school to enhance the appearance of campus, even if I won't be around to see it complete, I easily said yes. If no one was ever willing to pay for enhancements, MSU would never change. Any college in the nation would never change. And to think we already pay a lot less than most universities for tuition, I don't see what the big deal with 110 dollars a YEAR is. Think of the future of this campus that you've spent x amount of years at, stop thinking of only how YOU will benefit, and vote YES.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. How will the project be funded?
The project will be funded through a combination of student fees and revenue generated by the income producing retail operations of the Strand Union Building.

  2. Does the project require student approval?
Yes, the project does require the approval of the students. In April of this year the project will be placed on the ballot as part of the general student election. Students will be asked to vote in favor of the project, with a simple majority of the total votes cast required for the project to proceed.

  3. Are students involved in the planning process?
Student involvement has been a vital aspect of the planning process. All sub-committees on the overall project have student representation and the project required ASMSU Senate approval before plans could be finalized to place the project before the entire student body in April.

  4. What will the student fee be and when will it be implemented?
The total cost of the project is $27.63 million of which $18.13 million will be paid by a student fee of $55.47/semester beginning Fall 2005. Fee for Operation and Maintenance will start in Fall 2006 at $.25/credit or $3/semester and increase each Fall by $3/semester until a total of $9 is reached.

  5. When will the project begin and end?
The first phase of the project, the construction of the Black Box Theater, is scheduled to begin in 2005. All three components of the project are scheduled to be completed in time for fall semester 2008.

  6. What do these buildings have in common?
As you know, the SUB and H&PE are student-owned facilities, meaning they were built with student fees, for student use. Both buildings are very popular and heavily used, but also overcrowded and in need of repair.
Last fall, student leaders, faculty, and administrators met to discuss improvement and expansion of both buildings to meet increasing demand from current students and to strengthen student recruitment and retention efforts. Subcommittees were formed and an architectural design firm was hired to explore options, evaluate costs and to broadly define the Student Facilities Enhancement Project and each major project element.

  7. So where does the Black Box Theatre come in?
As part of these discussions, Administration, Media and Theater Arts, and ASMSU have worked out a trade that benefits the students that use the SUB and the students in the MTA programs. The proposed Black Box Theater will replace the aging theater in the SUB which MTA has utilized for academic program and performance but is now in need of extensive, expensive repairs. The Black Box Theater will provide a most economical solution by accommodating MTA in a new space while freeing up valuable, less costly existing space in the SUB to meet increasing demand for student spaces.
