Black Box Theater Project

Needs
In 1955, existing SUB space was
remodeled to provide a theater for the
university. The SUB Theater has not been significantly
remodeled since. As a result, the space has visibly
deteriorated and numerous code deficiencies pertaining to
fire and life-safety threaten its continued operation as a
theater. The costs to remodel the theater, address
accumulated deferred maintenance, modernize environmental
systems and remediate code deficiencies has been estimated
at $4-5,000,000.
Solutions
The construction of a new Black
Box Theater facility at VCB makes
sense and will accomplish several important tasks by:
providing over 12,000 sf of new space for MTA, providing
an exciting new venue for MTA activities with convenient
parking, and vacating 15,000 sf in the SUB for
expansion. Here is what is planned:
- 200-seat theater with balcony and projection capability
- Events lobby, box office, and restrooms
- Set construction, storage, loading facilities
- Costume construction and storage
- Green Room and Dressing Rooms
- MTA Offices and support space
Total Project Cost: $2,750,000
