Big Sky Institute for Science & Natural History
The Big Sky Institute of Montana State University offers seasonal field courses about the science of nature and the nature of science. Come enjoy a half day in the great outdoors while discovering nature’s mysteries of the Yellowstone ecosystem—from birds to bears to bacteria. Participants get a glimpse of the “inside story” to science by learning about the constantly evolving environmental, ecological and economic issues of the region.
The Big Sky Institute for Science and Natural History (BSI) promotes the distribution of science-based knowledge related to natural ecosystems and the human communities that depend upon them. Based in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem (GYE), BSI offers learners of all ages the excitement of scientific discovery while learning about our world.
One of the last intact ecosystems in the world, the GYE is an exciting place for scientific discoveries about the nature, culture and economics of ecosystems. As one of the region’s leading research institutions, Montana State University established the BSI to initiate, translate and deliver its objective scientific findings to learners from all walks of life and from all parts of the country, including the millions of individuals who visit the GYE each year.
Headquartered at the MSU campus and the Ophir School at Big Sky, Montana, BSI and its partners believe that participation in science will impart a better understanding of the science of nature as well as the nature of scientific inquiry, creating more ecologically knowledgeable, aware and articulate citizens. All of BSI’s education and interpretive programs include the actual science behind the knowledge, either through hands-on research or by incorporating current findings into the learning experience and displays.
BSI will offer educational programs during Summer 2008. Please visit the BSI Web site for current course listings.
