2010 Gallatin Earth Celebration!

Thursday, April 22nd

Keynote Lecture ‐ David W. Orr, 7:30pm, MSU Ballrooms

David W. Orr, author, professor of environmental studies, and advocate for ecological literacy, will give the keynote lecture of the Gallatin Earth Celebration at Montana State University on Thursday, April 22, 2010 at 7:30 p.m. in the MSU Ballrooms.  The lecture is free and open to the public.

David Orr is the Paul Sears Distinguished Professor of Environmental Studies and Politics at Oberlin College and James Marsh Professor at Large for the University of Vermont.  He is best known for his pioneering campaign to promote environmental literacy in higher education and his recent work in ecological design. On his home campus at Oberlin College, Professor Orr led the effort to design and build the first substantially green college building in the United States.  The Adam Joseph Lewis Center for Environmental Studies purifies its own wastewater and is powered entirely by sunlight.  But more significantly, it is a laboratory of sustainability that is training students for careers in solving environmental problems.

Orr has also distinguished himself as a leading thinker on environmental politics and climate change.  He served as an advisor to the Presidential Climate Action Plan, a two-year project spearheaded by the University of Colorado to develop a menu of policy and program recommendations for President Obama.  He is also involved in a project with prominent legal scholars to define the rights of future generations to "life, liberty and property" unspoiled by environmental degradation. Orr’s most recent endeavor, the Oberlin Project, is an inspired collaboration between the College and the City of Oberlin to spearhead sustainable urban revitalization projects in the community.

Professor Orr is the author of several influential books including:  Ecological Literacy, Earth in Mind, The Nature of Design, and the The Last Refuge: Patriotism, Politics and the Environment.  His latest book, Down to the Wire: Confronting Climate Collapse, is an eloquent assessment of climate destabilization and an urgent call to action. He received the Bioneers Award in 2002 and holds many other distinctions and honorary degrees.
