Advisors
Katie Crabtree
Sophomore, Biomedical Sciences, Jackson Hole, WY

When registration time comes around, many students walk around confused about what classes to take the following semester. Students may be thinking, “If I am not sure of a major, what classes should I be taking?” or “If I do have a major, which path should I be following through the curriculum? Your advisor is more than willing to help you answer all these questions.

Advisors are people who can help you with almost anything while you are in college. They not only help when you are deciding classes, but also for any other questions you may have. If you need to drop a class or change your major, these are the people you would go to. They also know about all the programs on campus, and will refer you to the right person if they aren’t able to answer a question.

Many offices also have peer advisors working several hours a week. I work in the general studies office two hours a week and help student with their questions. Peer advisors can’t do everything that an advisor can, but they help with anything that doesn’t involve a signature. They are also a good resource because most of the time they have taken a class you are looking to take. Many colleges have peer advisors available so you always have someone to talk to you. Take advantage of these advisors because they may be of more help than you think!

If you ever have a problem with an advisor remember that you can always change! Advisors are definitely not set in stone. If you need to change, talk to the secretary of the department to be assigned to another one. Recommendations from other students are always helpful to make sure you pick a good advisor.

Advisors can also be of help when graduation or scholarship forms roll around. Some of the best letters of recommendation can come from your advisor because they have been there and seen what you have achieved over the years. Getting to know them can be to your advantage in the long run!

Over the last two years, I have used my advisors for class scheduling, choosing a major, answering questions about internships… the list goes on and on. They are definitely a good resource, so take advantage while you can!
