Re:      Telephone Coordinators Newsletter – March 2005

Did You Know…?

Some of your faculty and staff may want a speakerphone or a display phone to facilitate their work? There are numerous models available, and we rely on you to tell us what your department needs.

The new FCC DO-Not-Call legislation now requires telemarketers to update and “scrub” their call lists every 31 days! For more information, go to http://www.ftc.gov/opa/2004/12/dnc31day.htm.

ITC – Telephone Services provides cellular phones for rent. They are $2.50 per day, plus airtime charges. Call ahead and reserve your phone today (for business use only)! For further information, call Chris at extension 1010.

New Verizon Representative

MSU has a new Verizon representative for personal cellular phone accounts.

Replacing Kristin Wirth is Jenny Passuccio. She can be reached at 800-942-2060, extension 4 or email her at jenny.passuccio@verizonwireless.com.

For personal or government account information, visit the Telephone Services website at http://www.montana.edu/telephone and choose from the links at the bottom of the page. MSU provides discounted rates for departments and personal use through Verizon Wireless and Cellular One.

If any questions, please call Chris at extension 1010.

Telephone Feature: Conferencing

All phones provided by ITC – Telephone Services, whether digital or analog, have the conferencing feature available.

Conferencing on a desk phone is simple and convenient when you need to connect up to six people, including yourself. These people can be located anywhere, as long as one party is on the MSU campus (and stays on the conference call).

Since most phones on campus are digital, here are some simple instructions on how to use the conference feature:

  1. Pick up your handset and dial your first party
  2. Once the party answers, press your “Conference” button – this puts your party on hold
  3. Dial the next desired party
  4. When the party answers, press your “Conference” button again
  5. Continue doing this until all of your desired parties are connected

Telephone Directory Updates

With staff and faculty leaving over holidays and breaks, this is a great time of year to review your department’s directory database and make any necessary corrections.

Please go to http://gemini.msu.montana.edu/msuinfo/dplist.html and access your department’s listing. Print it and make any corrections. Then, either fax it to extension 1955 or send it in campus mail to ITC – Telephone Services.

If you have any questions, please call Chris at extension 1010.

Communication Wiring Website

Looking for a status on a project happening on campus? If there is new wiring involved, the project will be listed on the Communication Wiring website at http://www.montana.edu/telephone/comm.wiring.html. The projects are updated weekly.

If you have any questions on an existing project, a new project, or a potential project, call Pat Simmons at extension 5460 or email her at psimmons@montana.edu.

Communication Wiring and Telephone Services will be providing an in depth update of all projects on campus at the Service Providers Group meeting, which will be on March 24 at 1:15 p.m. in SUB 276. Come join us to find out more!

Conference Depot

If your department spends a lot of money and time on conference calls, a new solution is available.

Many departments have started to use Conference Depot and are extremely happy with it. Conference Depot offers MSU lower rates - toll free calls are only .09 cents a minute!

Set up is simple and convenient. You are provided with a “room number” and pin number, which you use for every conference call. These numbers are specific to your department and invoices come directly to you.

For more information, call Chris at extension 1010 or email her at cbauer@montana.edu.

Switchboard Operators

For those of you who call the Campus Operator, or extension 0, we would like to introduce our student employees, Penny Porter and Cara Stetson.   Penny is a Junior from Stanford, studying Veterinary Medicine. Cara, a Senior from Helena majoring in Sociology, will be leaving us after graduation this Spring. They can assist you with telephone repairs, dialing information, as well as other general information.

If you are trying to reach Chris, please call her at extension 1010.

Telephone Services & Comm. Wiring Update

For those of you who are interested in a more in depth update of what is going on with ITC – Telephone Services and Communication Wiring, we have a Service Providers Group meeting that will update you!

The Service Providers Group meeting will be held on Thursday, March 24, at 1:15 p.m. in SUB 276. David Zeter, Supervisor of Telephone Services, and Pat Simmons, Associate Director of Projects, Finance, and Telephone Services, will give us a more thorough look at some of the projects that are occurring on campus. Hope to see you there!

Please pass this information along to all the people in your department.  Also let us know of any questions or issues that you want addressed.
