WHO are we?

Troops to Teachers is a U.S. Department of Defense program whose mission is to develop a pool of NCLB highly qualified teachers from retired and separated members of the Armed Forces, or from current and retired National Guard and Reserve members. Troops to Teachers has financial incentives that encourage our clients to serve at schools with the greatest need.

WHAT do we do?

Troops to Teachers is NOT a teacher preparation program, but Troops to Teachers does advise prospective teachers in obtaining a teaching credential and refers them to teacher preparation programs. Troops to Teachers assists its clients in finding job vacancies. Troops to Teachers assists qualified military personnel in making the transition from military service to classroom teaching.


WHERE do we serve?

Troops to Teachers is a nationwide program. The Lewis and Clark Region includes Idaho, Minnesota, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wisconsin and Wyoming. We recruit and advise nationally and serve locally. 


WHEN can we help?

Currently, across the five state region, we have approximately 150 prospective teachers who are classroom-ready.  We are constantly recruiting more prospective teachers, advising them in obtaining a teaching license/certificate, and sending your teaching vacancies to our clients.

In addition, current teachers who are veterans may qualify for a bonus of up to $10,000 just for continuing to teach, helping you to retain outstanding teachers in your classrooms.

Troops to Teachers has existed since 1994, and has assisted over 12,000 classroom teachers.

Why hire a “troop?” Troops to Teachers teachers have a high retention rate. They are mature, experienced leaders who have already served their country honorably. 

Troops to Teachers clients have worldwide experience and first-hand knowledge to bring to your classrooms and offer diversity (80% male, 40% minority), technology know-how, and teamwork skills. Our clients are accustomed to performing under pressure; they are drug-free and healthy, and dedicated to making the future better for your students.  As certified teachers, Troops to Teachers participants meet No Child Left Behind Act Highly Qualified definitions like any other teacher.

Young teacher

HOW does the program work?

You hire a “troop” like you would any other teacher. Let us know what vacancies you have, and we will advise our clients who are classroom-ready. The “troop” will put in an application along with your other candidates. Look for the "Troops to Teachers Letter of Introduction" in their application packet.

If you have current teachers who are veterans, let us know! They may qualify for a bonus of up to $10,000 just for continuing to teach. Posters are available for your school breakroom to help veterans learn about Troops to Teachers and get in touch with us.
