The Community Food Co-op in Bozeman was formed in 1979 and was originally located on South Wallace. It sold numerous food products and additional goods including motor. It wasn't until the cooperative moved to 10th and College in 1984 that it became a natural food store. In 1992 it was moved to its current location on West Main.
The Community Food Co-op currently has 8,000 members. This number observes steady increases as 250 addition members apply ever month. The key role of the cooperative is to provide its members with natural foods. One may join the cooperative by filling out a membership application available at the store. Lifetime members are available for thirty-five dollars, refundable after one year, or three-month memberships are available for six dollars. Payment plans are also available.
The cooperative has ten members on the board of directors. This includes eight elected from the members, the general manager, and one employee. The board meets on the third Thursday of every month. Two year terms are served by the elected members. Two are replaced in June and two in the fall of every year.
The cooperative is currently looking to expand their present store. Major projects include extending their kitchen and installing a bakery which will focus on producing dessert foods. The deli will also be strongly emphasized on producing pre-prepared, ready to eat food.
