Montana State University – Bozeman becomes the first University in the US to enroll in the FDA Voluntary Program Standards
MSU became the first University in the United States to enroll in the FDA Voluntary Program Standards in 2007. The FDA created the Program Standards in an effort to monitor the safe flow of food, such as for food purchasing, preparation and storage.
The twelve Program Standards represent a food safety program that provides a foundation upon which a food regulatory program can be built. This process encourages improving operating procedures and continuous improvement, with the ultimate goal of reducing or eliminating the occurrence of food borne illnesses.
MSU met the requirements needed to apply for the program; for example having a registered sanitarian on staff. MSU is continuously looking for different ways to improve food safety and handling, and by enrolling in the FDA Voluntary Program Standards, is forming a partnership with State and Federal agencies. This demonstrates the university's continued commitment to food safety.
